california has smog specific catalytic converters... i would imagine that oregon is much easier, but still requires a cat.

New cat from LCE 150 bucks. I had one left in NH that i had bought last year before i moved to this looney state. I had it sent to me and passed smog. That and resetting my timing.

Oregon isnt that hard, but you will need a cat. My old vehicles cat was going bad and I couldnt pass so I had to get a new one to pass. I may be wrong, but if your cali plates are still good you can keep them on until they expire. If that is the case then you can hold off on passing the smog test until you need oregon plates. I'm pretty sure if you passed the cali test you will pass here in oregon. Where about are you moving to? I was in corvallis for 4 years for school and you dont need to pass smog if you live there and I know there are a couple different places with the same deal. My buddy couldnt get his beamer to pass because of the cat so he just uses his brother address in corvallis and gets his tags there.

well its called DEQ, but it depends where you live in oregon that determines if you have to get tested or not.

Cali specs are the most strict. If you pass Cali, it's highly unlikely you will fail elsewhere unless something significant malfunctions.

smog stuff currently applies to the Portand metro plex I believe. Not sure if Medford is included. I've only been back home to Oregon for a little while. Still trying to learn all of the ins & outs.

Boy, crap changes alot when your gone from the state for 18 years.

yup depends on where you live, and it also depends on the year of the vehicle. if you pass in cali you will pass here, iv passed without a cat and half my emissions stuff removed on my 85.. i got way lucky that the dude forgot to look under the truck to see if i had a cat.

wait a minute; what year is your rig? if it is 86 or older, it should then be considered 25 years old, and now no longer need to pass a smog, it should be grandfathered in; should it not???

Depends on where you are getting the vehicle smogged. When I looked it up recently, Portland metro area your vehicle has to be 30 years old to be exempt, and medford area is only 20 years. Either way they only check the emissions at the tailpipe on the older vehicles, I have never had them check under the hood or under the vehicle when I smogged my vehicles.

Oregon should be much easier to pass.

I wouldn't go so far as to call California god awful. 40 million people (some of them actual legal citizens) can't be wrong. Oregon is becoming like a California Jr. When the first In-N-Out Burger opens up there, the transformation will officially be complete.

But as I said earlier, you shouldn't have a problem passing Oregon's emissions testing.

I had to get my 85 DEQ'ed. It flew right though. All they do is a sniffer test.

California is god awful, everything in this state is way over priced, requires a license or a permit or is against the law. California is the tree huger capital of the world. In two months im moving to Idaho were things are a lot cheaper and you don`t need a license or permit to do most things.

On PDX, not quite correct: vehicles made prior to 1975 are except in Portland. My '81 will always have to be smogged living in the Metro area

google is always a good resource:
oregon DEQ emissions: http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/vehicle/emissions.shtml

Oregon DEQ info: http://www.deq.state.or.us/aq/vip/

my engine is tired but runs strong--I fill up with super the tank before the test, do a 20 mile trip down the highway. Last reading was cleaner than the one when I first registered the truck
