Question Using 2WD trans in 4WD 2001 4Runner??

Looking for a used transmission for my 01 4x4 4Runner. Is it possible to use a tranny from a 2wd 2001 or 2002 4Runner. I thought the tailhousing's were different and the 2WD wouldn't bolt up to the transfer case?

Pretty sure the output shaft on the 2wd tranny will be different than that of a 4wd tranny

I remember learning something about square peg round hole in kindergarten.....but I digress.

How mechanically inclined are you? Ie, how well would you be able to basically rebuild a transmission? If you have never gotten into auto transmissions, I wouldn't bother trying to swap a 2WD into your 4Runner. If you have swapped tcases and rebuilt transmissions before, it should be a pretty straightfoward swp. It is NOT a bolt on swap by any means.

I won't be doing any of the work concerning the trans. LOL I am simply bringing a donor tran into my tranny shop and letting them install. I was just curious, as to whether or not a 2WD trans could possibly work in a a 4WD 4Runner. I didn't think it would work at all, but figured you guys would be the ones to ask. Thanks.

Toyota transfer cases are not divorced, so you have to find like type for like type.

You COULD use a 2WD transmission. You would no longer have 4WD.....with a 2WD trans....but that goes without saying.
