L43 W56 Transfer case mounting???

I have a 1980 Yota with a W56 Transmission with a transfer case mounted now. Will a transfer case from a L43 Transmission out of a 1979 Yota mount to it? I am planing on running duel cases. I have done some searches but have found nota. Thanks Michael

I think it is a W56 transmission I have in my 1980 Yota. I know it is a top shift. I ordered new shifter seals for the shifter to get the slack out and the parts were right. I was also told by the guy I bought it from it was a W56 but you know how that is sometimes.

one way to tell if it is a w56 is there has been some modifications to transfercase crossmember, it would have needed to be moved back about 4 inches or so. L series transmissions are shorter.

also before you go slapping dual cases together make sure you are the correct input shaft on the case from the '79...some of them were different and are not compatible with out some work to the splines:

I found this info in this thread on Pirate

basically you want to check the tc input shaft before you go cramming the cheap deal of a TC into an application other than a 4speed L43

though commonly thought not all RF1A TC's are created equal

When the next-generation L-series transmissions were introduced (L45/50/52), the output coupler was redesigned with a 1/2" counterbore (with no splines). This helps the transfer case input shaft find the transmission output coupler during assembly on the production line.

Toyota was probably damaging transmission output seals with that enlarged spline collar and were looking for a way to improve the design. We believe the 2nd generation 21-spline inputs are made from better metal therefore the strength of the splines were no longer needed, however we have not proved this theory. Another theory could be that Toyota wanted to include a "fuse" in the drivetrain.

Here is a picture of the L43-style transfer case input I installed behind a Marlin Crawler W56A-HD 5-spd trans:

Thanks a bunch on the info. I tore into the case today and I will have to grind it. No big deal. I will get pics when I get it ready to go back together.

when you grind it take your time so you don't heat up the shaft too much

I looked at my transmission today. I can't see any where it was moved back. I can tell the floor pan in the truck has been modified. Do you know the length of the L series transmission? I can tell you this it is a top shift 5 speed transmission.

Thanks for the hint on grinding. I will take my time to make sure it is right.
