Unfortunately, due to some health issues (nothing serious - just physical issue) I'm unable to complete my HG and timing chain replacement. I have EVERYTHING apart except I'm unable to remove the oil pan (can't budge bolts that hold on the cross member thing - 2WD). I need to get this truck back together and I'm willing to pay a shop to put it back together as I don't have much of a choice right now.

I know each shop will probably give me a different answer but what would you all guess as to the number of hours they would charge? I've seen some posts ( I did search a bit on this...) that people were quoted anywhere from $1000 to $1500 to do the complete job. Well, I'm half way there!! It should be at least half since I'm supply the gaskets, new head, etc.

ah, sorry - I'm in Virginia.

 

My understanding is this (and if I'm wrong, by all means, someone correct me)....you need to take the pan down to clean it out and because you want to get a good seal at the front of the pan / bottom of the timing cover mating surfaces.

Now, it is ALSO my understanding that it has been done without taking the pan off.

It(timing cover) has also been done without taking the head off and just "loosening the pan".

so to me, the pan is necessary. In the broad scheme of things...eh, maybe not if you need a vehicle running right away.

 

I passed the word to a killer upstanding guy in Va... Hang tight...

I already dropped the pan... but didn't take the crossmember off when I was healthy. Now, I need to get the pan off but physically can't get those bolts out. I doubt I'll be able to anytime soon.

I need to get the pan off to clean out the debris and redo the gasket. Or, I should say - I'm OK with paying for it...

Unfortunately, I was really enjoying this but have recently hit a wall..

Hard to say... I live in Nashville, so anyone needing work mechanics know they can stick it to yuppies... Yuppies "work" in a cubical, on a computer. They don't know a thing about cars other than they need it to get back and fourth... Mechanics know this...

In the country, it's another story... Everybody's broke!

PS, they're looking at it in a book and you're kinda messing things up b/c what you have there really isn't a listing of hours on.

i missed that you were unable to do it at all....i thought you were asking about the pan etc...but I see now, you want a reasonable price.

to me, it seems you've done 1/2 the labor already....so,...discount...

Try hooking up with some local Toyota folks. If you lived near me, I'd certainly come over and help. Other, more knowledgeable, Toyota guys around here would too.

I wish we had an easier online method for requesting and offering help.

I have the truck on jackstands and have tried to use a breaker bar on these bolts. I just don't have the leverage and strength due to my shoulder / back issue. Unfortunately, these seem to be the tightest or at least the worst to get to so far. I Know if I had an impact they would come right off..

..but I'm been told that I shouldn't be doing anything like this for a while (4-6 weeks) or my injuries will get much worse.. maybe require surgery.
