Tap Tap Tap goes my engine

so my pile of poo 4runner broke down AGAIN for the umpteenth time, so sick of this POS! So tired of working on it.......these are supposedly super reliable. I think I would be better off with an all original one with 300k miles on it.

anyways here's what happened, it's been almost exactly 1 year since I installed a new long block along with virtually new everything else. I was leaving school when suddenly I hear a tap tap tap tap tap tap really loud so I pull it over immediately and turn it off. Had it towed home (thanks insurance), pulled the valve cover, everything in spec/fine, pulled the spark plugs notta, so I start it and get underneath it and it sounds like it's either the flywheel area or back/bottom of the engine. Too loud to pinpoint even with a stethoscope. However, when the engine is just turned over without starting there is no sound.

So what could cause this? Either it's a bearing, or a flywheel bolt snapped or fell out (torqued to spec and locktited), or valve seat or something......

of course I happen to be replacing the wheel bearings and front brakes on my 2wd truck so now I'm yet again without a vehicle. I want to sell the runner and buy a metro or some . :b ang:

Anyway, too bad about the runner, yes they typically ARE reliable. Mine has 301,000 miles and gets me there and back no problem, roads and trails. Maybe have a mechanic look at it...

it's an oregon engines performance long block

still I have to pull it, pay to ship it etc

Big end rod bearing maybe? Spun bearings do happen.

so what does a spun rod bearing mean? Hear that term all the time but I've never messed with bottom end stuff.

what should I be looking for? Can a clutch/flywheel/pilot bearing cause something like this?

some good news is I got my 93's buttoned up so I at least have transportation on nice days with no ice/snow

Spun bearing technically means a bearing that has rotated and caused it's oil supply hole to not align with the oil feed hole in the crankshaft, thus cutting the oil supply off to the bearing face and resulting in the bearing galling and eventually seizing, but is usually used to mean any bearing that's been run without oil and has become damaged.

Since you bring up the clutch, a broken weight or spring on the pressure plate may make some noise.

I've had both spun bearings, and loose flywheels.

The flywheel is easy to tell, push the clutch in, does the noise change? A big-end bearing is a little more difficult, but usually the motor will make more of a rattle decelerating. Blip the throttle, and see if it sounds nastier when te revs are falling.

As for a broken spring, or other debris around the clutch/flywheel, take the access panel off, and shine a flashlight in
