Question 3.0 head bolt sizes?

Guys....

I need some help here. I'm trying to help a friend do a head gasket job on a 3.0...problem is...I'm in Pa. and she's in Colorado....probably a good 1800miles apart. I'm like her Toyota Tech line so to speak. Now I've done probably 10 head gasket jobs and have seen only one bolt size... the 12mm/12pt. head bolts...whether it's a factory head bolt or an aftermarket one.

Now... She sent me video comfirming that a 12mm/12pt socket will not even come close to fitting on the head bolts in this motor....neither will a 13mm/12pt. socket....a 14mm does fit over the head bolt, but it is alittle loose.

My question...Has anyone run into any other head bolts using a different head size unlike the 12mm/12pt. that I've only seen. She has to get this right the first time...once stripped....it goes without saying how much of a bitch this job will turn into.

Thanx guys...

Tom

Maybe its something standard?

It's either a 12 or 14mm 12pt.

Not to be a dick, but if one can't select the proper socket, perhaps one should refrain from doing a headgasket?

My 88 3vze has 12pt. 14mm head bolts. I oughta know, I've had the heads off of it 3 times now.

So's you know, the connecting rod nuts are 12pt. 12mm on a 3vze. I've been up in there too recently.

copy that... there are two head bolt sizes... pretty sure the larger one is 88-89... Then they went smaller... I think the same time the HG material changed...

I LOVE mine. I transplanted in the 14mm and gave it pure hell on a daily basis and it never showed signs of giving it.

I thought the smaller 12pt took a 13mm socket though...

Also pretty sure a way to tell is by what timing belt tensioner it has.

The spring will be the bigger one, and the hydro will be the smaller...

I appreciate all the replies....even the "not to be a dick statement".

See....I look at it this way....I've never seen anything other than the 12mm head size....didn't matter if it was on the older spring tensioner or the hydro...I never worked on a 88'V6 though....could be that???

Anyway...this girl is more of a mechanic that most any guy I know..she can tear into Busa or ZX12 tranmissions without hestitation....I told her nothing but 12mm...so I was the doubting Thomas...she sent the video and that had me wondering cause the way I see it...you only got one shot at getting these bolts off correctly....strip one head out of the 16 and you are screwed beyond any expletive you can come up with.....so I wanted a confirmation from the best group...other Toy guys! ...and you came thru with flying colors....she got'em off with her MAC14mm.....no Crapsman for this girl either.

If i didn't have a ring on my finger ...I'd be leaving for Colorado ASAP ....and alittle more info....she shoots Skeet with either her Benelli or her trusty Rem 1187....oh..one more thing...she's a bonified...Ex-JAGERMEISTER GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!.....I really am an idiot for not leaving for Colorado!!!

I swear..I kid you not...oh...and she rock climbs as well....I'll swear on anything you want...that I speak 100%truth!!

Holy sheetzzzz...what the hell's wrong with me....I'm startin to pack!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanx guys...

Tom
