How are the 5:29s working for you? I have a 4-cyclinder and an auto like you, but I always thought 4:88s worked best with tires that size.

The 5.29's are fine. The revs might be little on the high side for highway(3K at 65 mph), but for offroading and on the street it actually runs better since auto is such a dog to begin with.

I'm metrically challenged so I don't know what size he has (without googling it) but most AT Toyota's you drop down to the next lowest gear than the 5speed would use.

Most, if not all AT's have lower gears for torque converter lock-up and in the case of the Toyota AT, OD drops RPMs 500 RPM's instead of the 5speeds 250 RPM drop... Don't know why Toyota did that... It's almost useless.

So yeah, it's a fun excuse to drop a ratio. I always thought if I made a dedicated sand rig (All should be AT) I'd use it as an excuse to put 5:71's in since fronts don't get as much power as rears anyway...

Rocks, hard surfaces and IFS I'd highly advise against this.

Yeah i would actually recommend that if you have an auto 4cyl 4runner, go ahead and get 5.29 but dont run bigger than 33 if you want to compensate a little for having an auto.
