Ok heres my problem: Im driving down the highway at 65mph in 5th gear I come to a hump(overpass)and give it some pedal,my RPMs shoot up from 3k to 3500 with no increase in speed.I did that 4 times just to see if it would repeat,it did.Got off at my exit few miles later,stop and go traffic and the transmission functions perfect.Anybody know what kind of funky crap could be happening with my tranny? Thanks for any help guys! Update : correct spelling is revving.

 

Well......... could also be your clutch slipping. Especially if you're going up hill and giving it gas in 5th. Do you smell anything funny after this happens?

One thing you can do is go slow and put it in 5th and give it gas, if your clutch holds you will gain speed extremely slowly. If your clutch is slipping your RPM's will fly up with no speed increase.

 

MMMM the ole clutch slip in 4/5th gear syndrome..........PS if you get a clutch (centerfource dual friction) get a heavier flywheel.

Yes sir, works good so far, I had it put in 9/22/01 at 220476. I am at 272 k now.

 

Clutch. Mine did the same thing. The only thing is that since there is no burning smell, your transmission output seal is probably leaking and has contaminated your clutch. So you will need to have one handy and might as well replace your rear main seal while your in there.

I went with Toyota Seals, Marlins 1200 fp HD clutch. And a HD auto zone flywheel (heavy).

20,000 miles later. No problems, still strong and grippy.

 

Oh yeah, I also go the marlin flywheel bolts. They are stronger than the original.

Clutch. I don't know if the slave cylinder has an adjustment on those trucks, but also check that it's not adjusted too tightly such that the clutch doesn't release all the way. (That's also bad for the pilot bearing.)

If you only revved it to where the clutch slipped for just a moment, there may be no smell because it didn't get hot enough.

Teuf,how much did it cost you for a new clutch? if u dont mind me asking.Betelnut I only reved it for about a total of 10 seconds total.I was able to maintain 65mph but it wouldnt let me increase my speed.Evil dingo,sounds expensive for those seals and I dont have the means to work on my 4Runner.I would have to pay a pro to do it.

Well i am not sure that was in 01, i did not log the cost, i had the stealership install

 

Centerforce sells the flywheel, and there was no accel loss.

Depending on the shop it's going to run 8-15hrs labor plus materials, depending on 4x4 or 4x2, swapping seals, misc., etc. I don't know what labor costs in KS.
