I've done some reading and found a host of issues but nothing quite matches up and I was hoping someone has had a similar issue. I've got a '95 4Runner that was running great up until today. I took it to the car wash (just an automatic one) and ever since then it will start to hesitate at 1500k... rev to 2k RPM's then drop back. It does it over and over again as long as I have the gas pedal pressed down. This happens under heavy or light load. It idles fine and doesn't make any real noise other than the standard reving up and down. It's almost like there's a limiter on it at 2k. It does sputter at 1500k to about 2k but once it hits 2k it drops right back down. When I eventually get passed 2k it runs fine but will immediately hesitate when dropping below. There does seem to be a power surge once it does finally kick in but that's likely me just pressing on the gas hoping I can find the sweet spot. It also does this when I'm just sitting in park hitting the gas or driving. I'm not sure what the deal is but almost feel as if it HAS to be something with the car wash. I've just recently had the plugs and wires and cap replaced (about 2k miles ago) along with the fuel filter, water pump, timing belt and some vacuum hoses. I've got it in my garage right now with the heater on it hoping something just got wet. 4Runner has 128k on it. I'm in the process of looking at the TPS as that seemed like maybe the closest culprit but I'm a mechanical idiot so take that for what it's worth.

i had a similar issue and replacing the wires and the cap/rotor solved it. What kind of wires did you put? The reason I'm asking is because the wires that were on my truck were so cheap they were not even sealed. Even when new water could easily get inside the wires.

 

I can't remember off the top of my head what wires they were but I believe they were NGK and definitely were not not cheap. I put a heater out in my garage and let it run over night. This morning the 4 runner ran GREAT with no hesitation. So it's definitely water getting in somewhere. I'm going to silicone the hell out of the wires and cap to see if that makes a difference.
