hi guys, i just recently purchased my fist toyota truck. its a 1990 toyota pick up with a 3.0 v6. the problem that i have is that my gear ratios are off. its been lifted and has 33s on it. i researched and i believe 4.56 gears ratios is the way to go. i saw these on ebay TOYOTA PICKUP V6 8" 4.56 RING AND PINION YUKON GEAR and was wondering if they were any good. thanxs

 

Yukon makes damn good gears, I would maybe consider 4.88s though.

 

I have Yukons in my front diff. So far so good. I have a 5 speed, and running 31's with 4.56's.

 

my mistake, i have 31s. the problem that ive encountered is that on the freeway 3rd gear is good i switch to 4rth and i feel like im loosing power and 5 gear is a joke i never use it. its a 2wd. know what would be the power diff between 4.56 and 4.88.

 

2wd, its lifted with 31's? What was the stock gearing and tire size?

 

it came equiped with p215/65r15 the only thing else it says on the side door sticker is c/tr 179/gp1 and a/tm g382

I have not dove too far into 2wd gears and tire combos. I have no clue off the top of my head what will work for your rig. And my head is too fried to start researching tonight. Sorry dude, hope you find a little more info.

Look up that g382 code to find your gear ratio.

 

hey man i have a 2wd 2rz 4cyl with 33s i run 488 and 5th gear at 75-80 is as fast as i can go without winding it out i Cruz at 70-75 tho and nothing slows me down i rarely have to down unless i am going up huge grade and my truck is heavy with full cage 2 spare tires 44 gal fuel cell on Bord jack tools...
so i would sugest 456 for 31s and no exta waight

G382 is g= 8 inch 38=3.417 gear ratio 2= 2 pinion.


The gear calculator (grimmjeeper) doesn't have an application for 2wd, so I am dead ended for now. Not sure how that ratio/ tire size equates up to 31's.

 

nice thanxs alot i do ride dirtbikes a lot and load them on my truck but i think 456 would still be good
so those ebay gears should do the trick?

hey guys i know its been a while but i finally ordered my gears, what else am i going to need. am i going to have to buy a gear installation kit for my new gear ratios or is it going to be more like open up the rear differential and instal the new gears,, if u guys have advice id appreciate it thanks.

 

If you have never done gears, I would recommend taking them to a reputable shop to have them installed. Especially Toyota gears.

 

ive done work before on my truck im just trying to figure out if theres anythng else i might need to do since itll be my first time taking apart the differential to instal gears

The 4x4 trucks with 31" tires run 410 or 456 gears all the time...so I think 456 would be my choice, too. It sure will seem to have a ton of get up and go off the line I bet. No prob pulling any kind of load also. I'm on my summer fishing break so all I can do is point you to my website....I have a couple of pics of gears and such

 

just because you can turn a wrench doesnt mean that you can set gears... you'll want to have a shop set the gears, or watch CL for a 4.56 3rd (assuming you really do have a 8" housing) and find one that came with those gears from the factory. i was able to get my 4.56 rear 3rd for a 100 bucks.
