On the 3VZE you need to pull the TB off to use the feeler gauge. Recommend a new toyota dealer TB gasket to reattach, and be sure to use factory spec torque when remounting (not very much).

Hi. I am experiencing code 41 and code 71. Is there a write up for code 41 and how to check the TPSto diagnose it before buying one for a 3.0 3VZE. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated

I followed the write ups to check the TPS attached to the vehicle without disassembly. I used feeler gauges that had a bend in them already and this enabled me to set them in place. my readings were definitely all off. I started with step 3 to get a reading for infinite and tried setting it. it was very difficult to get the reading just right. almost no play in the position which leads me to believe there might be something wrong with the TPS. Some tests would not register a reading at all.How much play is in the attachment and should you get readings from left to right as I only get a reading in just one very small position. any help would be awesome as I dont want to spend money on a TPS that is working correctly. Thanks!

Welcome to YotaTech.

How do we know what "step 3" is in the write up you're using?

Here's the manual page: http://web.archive.org/web/201108151...93throttle.pdf
The only thing you are setting is the idle switch. IDL connects to ground at idle, disconnects when not at idle. The reason it sounds complicated is that Toyota actual defines what "at idle" is (0.50mm or less is at idle, 0.80mm or more is not at idle), and Toyota defines what "connected" is (less than 2.3k ohms is connected, any more than that is disconnected.)

This setting is important, but only has a tiny bit to do with code 41. Code 41 is "Open or short detected in throttle position sensor signal (VTA) for 0.5 sec. or more." So you should check the resistance from VTA to ground, and assure that it sweeps smoothly from about 0.5k to about 6.1k ohms, without any drop-outs, when you move the throttle. (The exact numbers aren't as important as drop-outs.) Then, you should check the wiring. The wiring is MUCH more likely to give you a code 41 (open or short) than the component. And replacing the component won't address a wiring isue.

Scope103,
As per usual you are spot on yet again. Thanks for debunking some of the mystery surrounding the TPS on the OBD1 equipped 3VZ-E engine.
