Just picked up a stock 87 4runner, new to the Yota crowd. But not new to wheeling or wrenching. I have an overly built K5 Blazer.




I need to replace the oil pan gasket and rear main seal. So with pulling the trans/tcase. Should I be able to pull both without the need to pull them apart. Or would pulling the tcase make the job easier? What kind of weight am I looking at for the trans and tcase? I do have a trans jack but its not the best. With the trans out am I still going to need to drop the front diff to remove the oil pan? Also any hints or secrets that may help me out along the way??

 

When you pull the tranny/t-case, just remove the rear driveline, disconnect the front driveline at the third member, remove the shifters from the top, unbolt the bellhousing and support brackets, remove the starter, remove the slave cylinder from the tranny, disconnect the 4wd indicator switch, reverse light switch, and speedometer cable, then unbolt the transmission crossmember bolts (8) from the frame and lower the whole assembly with your jack. You'll need a long extension for the two top bellhousing bolts. I am assuming you have a manual transmission.

I haven't removed an oil pan with the engine in the truck before, so I'm not for sure about that procedure. If I recall correctly, you do need to pull the front third to remove the pan. It's pretty easy to get out though. The rear main seal is a piece of cake too.

One more question. Do I need to replace the fly wheel bolt or is it ok to re use them?

 

I reuse mine. Never had a problem. Don't forget the loctite.

 

Cool. The only reason I asked is in the Chevy world it is recommended that your don't reuse them.

Another question. Do I use rtv for the oil pan gasket. Or do I go buy the correct gasket?

 

Use the toyota FIPG sealer. Buy it at your delear. You will never have a leak.
