Hey guys,

It's getting pretty chilly outside. My rear heater hasn't worked for awhile and it hasn't really bothered me much because the main heater works just fine. It kind of worried me to go to the back of the truck only to find a water bottle frozen solid after a 30 minute drive. The rear fan works just fine, but no heat. I replaced my coolant about 4000-5000 miles ago. Anyone have any ideas? I was hoping for a simple fix. Maybe an air bubble?

 

Did it ever work. Maybe a previous owner disconnected it, are the lines still there. Could also be a clogged line or heater core. Also check that the temp control valve is connected to the lever. Remove the centre console and make sure the wire is hooked up.

 

It use to work quite well including after I changed the coolant. I'm not sure where I can check to see if the line is clogged, but I'll look into it. I'll check that the control is connected to the lever right now. Thanks for the idea!

 

Seems to me that it is either completely clogged or the system isn't filled all the way...

Did you put both heater controls to hot before you filled it?

Warm it all the way up with the cap off the radiator, if your level goes down, you will know you had an air bubble.

 

x2 if all was well prior to you changing coolant you need to "burp it," you can park it so the rad is elevated helps in tough cases.

 

Out with the truck now. Going to check to see if there's a bubble before I got tearing through the interior

 

I just added coolant. The reservior was a little low but the radiator was full even at 180 degrees. BUT is it normal for the coolant to have a really nasty scum on top? In both the res and the rad there was a brown scum that looked like a mixture of oil and rust. Any thoughts? Oh and still no heat in the back. Just blowing cool air

 

No, not normal......

I hope I'm wrong, but it sounds like there is oil (of some kind) in with the coolant.....

Check the oil and trans oil....

 

Engine oil is fine, and I have a standard tranny. My father and I are thinking the previous owner never changed the coolant. The scum might be 12 year old coolant. So maybe the lines are clogged? Oh and my water pump is crying. It grinds when the truck starts but then goes away when it warms up. Now how should I go about getting to the rear line to flush it?

 

It tee's off the heater lines at the firewall, follow the two lines back.

Sounds like you need a water pump and a few more flushings.
