22rs are known for blowing head gaskets, you ran out of heat cause ya ran the motor out of water. pull the head and have it pressure checked.(worth the money) if all good reassemble with new gaskets

22re's are definitely not "known" for blowing head gaskets, you might be thinking about the 3VZE. 22re's can blow head gasket's if they are overheated due to the cast iron block and aluminum head. I would have to say if anything the 22re is "known" for being a reliable, almost bulletproof little 4 cylinder. It is arguably the best engine Toyota has ever engineered. That said, it could be a blown head gasket, cracked head or maybe your timing chain wore a hole through the cover letting water into the oil.

My current truck is a 22re and it is the third one I have owned and none of them had any issues or blown head gaskets and the previous 2 had well over 200K miles. Good Luck
