Starter motor bolts

Newby here...my son just bought a 1979 4WD toyota Hilux for getting around this winter...we got it running last Friday (270,000m), fixed the choke (water choke...??), he took off and the next day he fired her up, took off down the road and it died at the stop sign andhe had a little trouble getting it going, the next stop he had to push start it and when he looked under the truck, the starter motor was hanging by the wiring! So, the question is, does anyone know what bolts hold on the starter so we can go get some new ones (with lockwashers!).

Any other hints would be welcome...the truck is fairly good...PO was going to make a rock crawler, so it has been treated pretty badly.

Thanks ahead!

Tim

I don't know...can't you just grab some random bolt and see if they fit and then go get the proper length ones and proper thread pitch.

I sure can! Now, when the truck gets here tomorrow (it is at his house, he has no garage - see weather below) we'll bring it in the garage so it can thaw out (we've got 4 inches of snow here and 6 more expected tonight, temp right now is 16°), crawl underneath and get a random bolt to find out the thread and diameter, then we can hop in another vehicle and zip to the hardware store.

Or -

Some kind soul would pass that info along and I can pick up the hardware today and have it ready...

Thanks!

Tim

I totally understand. It was in the low 20's today where I live, and I stand outside 8 hours a day.

Sorry if I sounded rude, but I am not a Toyota nerd and I do not know the thread size, length or pitch of the bolt off the top of my head.

I'll do a search and see what it comes up with.

Here you go...

10mm X 1.25mm thread pitch bolts, approx. 2.5" long (you can figure the
length out). I think the stock bolts are metric grade 10.9, which is
near equivalent to Grade 8 in SAE. I'm sure you could make do with the
more easily obtainable 8.8 metric grade bolts if necessary. The bolt
heads are 14mm from the factory; aftermarket hardware suppliers usually
use 14 mm heads on 10 X 1.25 bolts/nuts as well.

See how easy searching was?

Top one is a stud...Bottom one is a bolt. That is for a 1988 pickup

Ok let me phrase this another way. Toyota put a stud on the top bolt to aid in getting the starter back in. You start the top stud, align the bottom bolt and snug it up, then snug up the top stud. I guess it dosen't matter if you like to struggle with things and end up messing up more stuff then which was origionally wrong. i.e. threads on the top hole. I personally don't like to helicoil things in that tight of space. You dig?

But hey, i like to make my life easy...

my two cents

My son went to the local Toyota dealer and ordered the bolts...turns out the PO stripped the belll housing so we had to buy a longer bolt, which worked just fine after it found the unused threads.

Now for a new problem...we thought the old starter was bad because of falling out, etc., but it turns out the new starter quickly developed the same problem...smashed bendix that won't engage the flywheel...what makes a bendix smash instead of engaging? Are we gonna need to replace the flywheel or did O'Rielly give us a wrong starter? I've never seen this before...

TIA!
