Smog exempt and want to clean up my 22R
#1
Im smog exempt and rebuilding my engine for performance over sized pistons and valves, weber 38, RV cam, etc. yet all that smog junk is hanging all over. What exactly do I need to run at optimum performance and what can go in the trash? That also goes for misc. vacuum lines. Thanks for the help.

In very few places around Southern Cal. there are exempt locations that DMV does not want you to know about and one of them is in san diego county, Warner Springs the magic Zip code is 92086 get your self a po box there and your set for smog exempt. Im in orange county about 2 hours from Warner's but its more than worth it.

well its an unincorporated area (no city hall, or council, etc.) its considered rural area so smog conditions are non existent. Most unincorporated cities are exempt I believe. You can check for that city status online but only Sacramento (CA. capital.) has knowledge of smog exempt cities. When I went to the DMV to register my truck in "Warner's" I came to the conclusion that they dont even have access to those specific exempt locations. Only when you divulge your zip code does the computer populate whether or not its smog exempt. If you live in CA. or another state I would check for an unincorporated city in your area with its zip code then call the DMV ask what the smog regs are, they will tell exempt or not. Don't tell them your looking for smog exempt I always get this vibe and line of questioning that there might be some initiative to sway people from this direction. Good luck.

You can search for more info (this has been covered a lot), but you basically need the distributer vacuum advance...I think I'm missing something but that's about it.
Obviously you don't want to plug off the pcv and breather, but you can just throw filters on them. There may be a couple other vacuum hoses you need, but not many.
