I'm trying to do the timing chain on my 89 pickup with a 22RE, and the woodruff key is stuck in the crank!
I have tried to tap one end down with out much luck. Any hints on how to get this bugger out?

 

Why are you removing the key?

Everything is supposed to slip over/around it. I had to file mine down a very tiny amount to let everything slide on easier.

I dont think it is removable on a 22re. Mine and my brother never came off.

 

Dont tap it, hit it harder on one side use a punch it will come out .

 

x2 on using dikes to pry it out we get keyways rusted fast all the time at my work on electric motors, if that don't work get a bigger hammer... I don't think it's necessary to remove if ur just doing a timing chain like mentioned above though.

 

The very front one is a mess from the PO timing chain replacement. Nothing would slide past it, and the pulley was a mother to get off.

I got it out, with quite the fight to boot! The PO couldn't get it, so they left the old gear on, that killed the chain. The top gear and the guides are in great shape, but the chain was very lose through the links, it had all most a 16th of a inch of play on the links. The tensioner was all most at the end of it's travel trying to take up slack when I got the cover off. The new chain has the new tensioner all most compressed fully.
The key is trash, it was mushroomed on the top at some point in the past, this would not let the oil pump drive gear or the timing gear come off the crank shaft.

92, I have been reading your thread, your doing a good job with what you have done so far. I don't have a picture for you right now, but I'll work on it. If you want to see what I'm talking about, head out to the garage and look at the crank on your truck. There are 3 lil bars the are sticking up from the crank at the 12 o'clock position if you were looking at it at eye level from the front of the truck. They are more or less a quarter of a circle that sits in a matching recess in the crank.

 

I had the opposite problem wwhen working on a truck for my brother-in-law. We picked it up for $350 because the PO's mechanic told them it would need a new crankshaft because the key-way had "wallerd out" and wouldn't stay in. The engine would start up and run though and it sounded so freakin' smooth for 250K miles. We dollied it to my place and started to look into it. What happened, and I have no idea how this happened, but the pully itself somehow was ground down on the inside by either the crankshaft or the woodruff key itself. It had a taper to the inside of the pulley. I'm not a Toyota expert but I do recognize a non-machined surface. I went to the dealership and got a new key for $3, then grabbed a new pulley for $25 and had it back in perfect condition. No problems since then

Strike it inline with the crankshaft. Woodruff keys are design to ramp themselves out of the groove.
