Lack of power,sputtering 88 4x4 pickup

Hi all,I have a 1988 toyota 4x4,short box, regular cab. When I go to accelerate, the truck starts sputtering, and doesnt have any go in it.Sometimes I have to rev it up to 4,000 rpms before I shift gears.I cant get the truck over a 100 km on the freeway either.I had the fuel filter changed a couple months back, new air cleaner. What could be the problem?

check your timing, valves maybe change your spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor button.

is it throwing any codes?

I'm not sure what you mean by throwing codes. But it does have the charge battery light and e brake light lit up on the dash.

Doesn't that mean the alternator is bad? Or at least there's a problem with the charging system?

Similar issues in my '86 w/22r, 4WD, 5 spd. Seems go away once the truck warms up. Truck has been tuned up, new plugs, hoses & belts, oil & filter changed. Yes, I'm a newbie... any ideas?
