Welcome to Yotatech!

This idea has been brought up before, but you might have to search around here for it. I couldn't find it...

Yes it can and its a bad a$$ modification! Jon Bundrant (all-pro offroad) did it to his personal vehicle way back in the day. A 87 4runner called "red nub"

and with enough cutting and welding I could put a tailgate off a Nissan on it. but seeing it done in the picture, cant be too much involved......about time to make a trip to the boneyard.

do the simple route: gut the Runner tailgate-remove the glass, motor etc and just cap the window opening....

On a semi-related note, are there any tailgates that will work on a second gen 4Runner?

oh the glass, window motor, etc works just fine but I no longer want the fiberglass top and plan on instead fabricating a back window and roll out teannu cover for the back. (still keeping the back seats)
