I posted this in the engine swap section to but thought it might get a little more response here.
I have a 88 22re. I bought an 84 22r motor. I have an auto tranny (from 88). Any problems with motor mounts or tranny bolts. What about the electrical stuff (lights mostly) I removed the radiator and found what looks like 2 oil lines connected to the bottom of the radiator. does the radiator have a an oil coolor in it too? Will I have problems with an 84 motor (did they have a different radiator)
How doess the ignition system differ between the 2?
The 84 motor I bought was taken out of a hill climbing race truck. I think it might have a 20r head on it. What do I have to measure to find out.
I believe it has a weber 38/38 carb on it.
Any help is apreciated.

 

What are you wanting to do? Put the 22R in the 88/22RE chassis?

The radiator has a cooler in it for the automatic transmission fluid.

84 ignition system probably had points in the distributor, the 88 22re has EFI and the ecu controls the timing- the distributor only has an electronic pick-up coil in it.

 

I started removing things yesterday. I thought the lines to the rad were oil lines cause it looked like oil that came out when i disconnected them. Turns out the tranny fluid needs changed. I am putting an 84 in a 88 chassis. Although I'm going today to make sure it is an 84 block and not something else.
So i'll also have control of the timing with the 84. Any more info on how the 84 distributor works? All my past vehicles I've had to do work on were 2.2L gm motors. They are much different than the 22r series.
It does look like all the tranny/engine bolt holes will line up. As long as the spline is the same I should be ok.

LC engineering has a good tech section on differences between 20r 22r/re blocks and heads. And it's fairly accurate from what I've seen. u can tell the differences In the heads by the intake and exhaust port shapes. (rounded, square or pear shape). deck height of the block changed in 85.

 

oh and I know u can bolt up a pre 85 block to a 85and newer 22 r series 5 speed so the auto should also bolt up BUT being that they are an ECT transmission I can guarantee it'll be a nightmare to figure out that wiring harness (If it's even possible going to a carb motor). I would replace the auto with a 5 speed before throwing in the new motor. Have done the 5 speed swap to 2 of my trucks and thinking about doing it to the lexus also, since I have a spare 5 speed from a 7mgt supra sitting around. Getting rid of the automatic is one of the best thing u can do to a 'yota.

 

how hard is putting in a clutch assembly? (pedal, master and slave cylinders)

 

what I wanted to do anyway was just get the wiring harness from an 84 22r with an auto tranny. I need the harness anyway for the distributor.

 

Why not just rebuild the origional motor (since its gonna be out). No worries about wiring ect...Then you will have a new 300000 MILE MOTOR.

Oh and the automatic is just a matter of opinion...They have there pros and cons.

 

I already bought the new motor. The truck is going to be a drag racing truck but I want to be able to drive it around the road. Plus the cost of rebuilding a 22re is around 1000 bucks if you do it right.
There are wiring harnesses for 22r motors with auto tranny's. I just found one for 160 bucks.

 

the best way to do it is to rip out as much of ur dash as possible, get the new donor clutch/ brake assembly bracket in there and use it for a template to drill from the inside out (making sure u have no wires hoses or brake lines in the way first) u'll have to drill 2 holes for the studs for the master cylinder then ~1 1/4"hole for the main part. Thats how my bro did his 4runner. I cheated when I did both of my swaps. Just guessed, started drilling from the outside in, and then used a burr to get it right. Theres some gaps and it's not the prettiest way to do it but it worked. an extra hand is helpful when u bolt the brake booster back up.

 

I have the A43D tranny which is why I don't have all the confusing wiring. The A340 tranny is the ECT (electronic cntrolled tranny) The A43D was offered in 2wd 22re models only.

 

On top of everything else, it's illegal to do that swap.

and as long as I have everything the emmisions sticker under the hood says I need then it is still legal. I thought it was illegal as well but my uncle (a mechanic of 20 years) said its fine as long as I still would have the egr, cat etc..

how about you quit being a jerk and help out. You haven't actually said why its illegal. My cousin owns a auto shop that does inspections and as long as it passes tail pipe emissions its ok with him.

 

Not everybody has to deal w/ california emmisions yet. Some parts of PA don't even have to get emmisions tests yet (the backwoods folks a little north of me for 1).
