I have a 87 4runner sr5 5-speed 22re. The rearend just started "clunking" and I want to swap a boneyard replacement in it. I have only found ones from a 94 and 95 4runners both sr5's if I remember right, will these work? Thanks in advance for any help.

 

As long as they are 22re manual trucks they came out yup they will.

 

Any 8"(all 4x4 and some 2wd) rear Toyota differential will work, pre-'96, pick-up or 4runner and probably some older Supras. v6 or 4cyl.
Two things though:
its best to match the gears you have already (4.10s with 4.10s in your case) other wise you'll need to regear the front end.
A v6 third will work, but the flange holes won't match up to the 4cyl drive shaft. You can just drill holes to fit.

 

^Thus find an OEM Rear end.

 

All of these they are talking about are OEM

 

If its out of a Toyota it would be OEM

 

Are you sure the pinion nut didnt just loosen off?

 

OEM for that truck.... I mean if he wants to get a v6 rear end or somethin of that nature and change other gearing to match this gearing..... well woopppiiieee..... Thats his choice.... The 22r rear end his truck has also has bolt holes and and hook ups for brake lines and cables and such....i mean..... it would be easier to find one out of a truck that matches his but w/e...... UNLESS! hes just changing the differential it self..... and for some reason in my head i was thinking he was changing the whole axle and housing...... course his question sounded like it for a min.... then yea you could get other yotas diffs......and make them work......lol i'm thinking to hard i need a drink

 

89 and newer 4runners have coil springs so they won't work w/88 and older trucks /4runners. if you found a 86 to 95 truck axle it will fit. v6's dropout thirdmembers are stronger and interchangeable as well as axleshafts from 86 to 95 (axleshafts are the same as 4cyl). so u can get the newer 4runner one 4 parts but the housing won't fit... and as mentioned by toyota4x4907 make sure the gears are the same or u'll break alot more stuff when u put it in 4wheel drive

can you jigle ur driveshaft? if it has any movement by the pinon then your pinion nut is loose, and you dont have to tear anything apart for the just take off the axle side of the D-shaft and there it is! its a 30MM socket

Actually a lot of v-6 trucks ran a 4.10 rear just like the 4 cyl's, it's a direct bolt in swap.

I threw an 89 v-6 rear axle under my 84 pickup it bolted right in brakes and all

 

I think the code you are looking for is a g292 or g294. Find a 4runner or pickup with that code on the placard under the hood and if its still stock, its 4.10's


Did 94 and 95 22re 4Runners come with 28's? I figure those should have come with the factory 31's, giving them 4.56's, right? (g254)

if you have 31's or are switching to them soon, might not be a bad time to think about swapping in 4.56 gears, will keep everything, including your speedo, as close to stock as possible.

I still have the stock 4.10's in there. Its a slug off the line and my speedo is 5 or 6 mph off on the freeway.

But since I have 265/70/16's, it puts me in between gears, the math throws me at a 4.43 ratio, which puts me directly in the middle of 4.30's and 4.56's. bastards!

 

Are you saying that the drop outs are different depending on what springs they have?
