Sorry for the cross-post ... I'm a new member here, but an an old Toy oyner . . . Learned through these forums, that my 02 runner is in need of a new oxygen sensor for the front of the converter. So instead of waiting to order it online, I bought one at AutoZone. They gave me a Bosch. After some research this evening, I've seen negative remarks about this brand of sensors, though they date back to 2006, so I'm unsure of their quality today. Should I return this model ($180) and wait 3 days for an online order to arrive? I got a 15% discount for buying new plugs (NGK platinums) and new Bosch premium wires with the total purchase. Now I'm wondering. I certainly don't want to have to reinstall this sensor in two years ... Can anyone offer any advise tonight, before I install it this afternoon? Return it at once. Toyota does not play well with Bosch stuff and it will throw codes or give you problems. That and you really overpaid!

Go to sparkplugs.com and get yourself a Denso 234-4162 Identical OE sensor on sale for $76.12. They usually run for about $100. I have one of them on my truck and just ordered another. It will last for a long time.

Ok, I'm an amateur here, but I'm guessing when they say rear and front, they mean rear of the cat and front of the cat, right? Sound's kind of dirty when I spell it out like that, but ...

So while I'm adding things to my checkout, can you recommend the right wires and plugs, or do I even need new ones? I'm unopposed to changing them, but would like to be pointed in the right direction. thanks a bunch! ~Chris

 

Plugs: NGK #BKR5EKB-11 or Denso #K16TR11. Doesn't matter which one, both are stock OEM.

Wires: NGK #TE66 or Denso #671-6182.

We can't really tell you if you need new plugs and wires because we don't know anything about your truck except '02 4runner. These part #s are for a 3.4L, BTW. I suggest giving some details about your rig in your signature. You'll get better advice and it's an excuse to brag a little about your truck, because we all love our yotas!

 

I have always felt weird putting German engineered products into a Japanese made vehicle. I personally have had bad experiences with Bosch. Spark plugs. I had to rebuild 2 engines because the electrode busted off and cracked the piston. Put OEM and you can't go wrong. Piece of mind is well worth it. BTW, they only made the 3.4L in the 2002 4Runner. They didn't make the 4 cyl.
Either way, I know people that have put Bosch spark plugs (platinum +4) in the 3.0L V6 Camry (3MZ-FE) and it doesn't run right from point of replacement.

Usually the wires will last a few plug changes. I havn't had any problems with mine and they have never been replaced. I went 180K on a single set of wires in my V6 Camry and it ran like a dream. The dealer told me they rarely replace them and they only replace them when they go bad.

 

Where are you seeing $76.12? I am seeing $81.xx for the REAR. He said he wanted the FRONT. That one is $153.59 for the FRONT.

The 234-4162 is for the 2000 and older 4Runners and T100s. The 01-02 4Runners have VERY different emissions than the 1996-2000. They basically changed almost all the emissions components in the 01-02 from the 96-00 4Runners.

 

When I replaced mine on my Taco I was able to pick up 2 Denso's for about $150. They have been perfect thus far.

 

Yeah those newer 5VZFEs use an air fuel ratio sensor for the front, not a standard O2 sensor like the early models did.

 

The sensor you need should be a 234-9002. I have a new one that I received basically from ordering one and getting the wrong part. Let me know if you're interested.
