Hi all,

How many Ks do the trannys on these '98 4Runners last? I've got a '98 4Runner 2.7L 5 spd. manual with 400,000 km on it. It's engine is blown out and done. BUT I can put a '99 engine, same specs, in it for pretty cheap thanks to a friend.

I just wonder if it's worth it. My worry is tranny, drive box, etc. is gonna blow next.

Thoughts?

I believe the gear ratios differ-particularly when you move up to the 16 inch wheels- so check further on that.

Properly lubricated and with an intelligent shifter owner the tranny should last but why not go for a newer, less kilometers/miles unit already mated up?

I get the impression your rides are Canadian and things may be significantly different for your models as opposed to US. But '99 was an upgrade year and I am not at all sure how easily a 98 tranny will accept a 99 engine.

 

Maybe. I have no idea about the ratios and the upgrade years and all that. My friend's shop says they can do it . . . I just wonder what kinda of parts are going to break down next.

Anybody else been through a rebuild like this?

 

The trannies from 96-02 are the same only the transfer cases differ. In your case with the manual your fine. As long as the tranny wasn't abused it'll go pretty much forever. With the 4-banger I wouldn't imagine it having been too badly beaten on. That 4banger would be a lot nicer with the 5spd though. I had an auto that was aight but I'd have much rathered a 5spd. I'd go for it.

 

for what its worth, I have 246,xxx on my truck. replaced the motor with a salvage one, and it had the original clutch in my runner, replaced that and the bushings from martin crawler. it feels new!

 

246, xxx. You're talking miles, correct?

Yeah, I figure I'll have to do some bushing, suspension and general front end steering work.

But that's relatively minor. I'm just worried the tranny is gonna explode on me. I've been fairly good to it. Done the fluids every 100,000 k or so, intelligent shifting, etc. Mostly highway Ks on it.

I figure I'm gonna go for it.

I think everything will match up correctly and your tranny should have lots of life in it since it was treated good.

 

I just purchased a 1993 4runner sr5 v6, I am curious on two subjects. I have seen other 4runners with looks like beefer tires but no lift can i put 31x10.5 without doing a suspension lift or body lift and my other question is my 3rd gear is tough to get into at times where i cant even force it in and theres time it goes with ease, the slave cylinder was replaced so do anyone think that possible replacing the synchronizer would be a good idea? thanks

 

I had intermittent tough shifting in 2nd that was pretty much eliminated by switching to Redline MT90 fluid in the trans (also used Redline oils in the rest of the system)

That may be something to try before getting more drastic, but I have also heard of getting leaks after switching to synth. I think I got mine early enough and it's been a few weeks with no seepage.

You'll be fine. Sounds like you've taken care of it. Carefully inspect the exh manifold though. They do crack on those 2.7's.
