I did a search but couldn't find something that was applicable enough. I've doing a ton of work on my truck (interior, exterior, maintenance, bodywork) on my truck and I'm going to be painting it with Interlux Brightside. I will definitely be making a build thread about this.

I don't like the location or looks of the antenna, so basically I want to mount it somewhere else, and cover up the hole of the existing location with fiberglass before I paint. I was thinking about laying it horizontally inside the passenger fender panel (next to the battery). I think if I do this the only downside will be reduced AM reception, but FM will be largely unaffected. I also have a Zune with FM reception that works great either way.

Any thoughts, or people who have tried this themselves?

 

A lot of compact cars have them in the a-pillar. I think that would get better reception than under the hood but maybe not... When i had a car that had the a-pillar antenna I always had it crammed down in the hole and it still worked fine... maybe you could snag that part at a junk yard.

 

You could try what I did with a HAM radio antenna HERE with an aftermarket AM/FM antenna, if the goal is to just get it off the sheetmetal.

That's not an "invisible" install tho.

scaesare, great writeup, and the final product looks awesome. I do think I want mine to be invisible though. I used to have a huge CB antenna and other stuff on my truck, but I'm looking for a really clean look now.

I'll take pictures of whatever I end up doing.

 

Most aftermarket replacement fenders do not have the antenna hole, I would just buy a new fender if you are repainting the entire truck. Less body work to mess with in the end

Certifit panels for the 89-95 trucks were around $26 when I checked pricing last month.

 

That's a great idea, but I already sanded it down, little bit of bondo, and it's prepped for paint aside from a the potential radio antenna hole. That and I'm probably painting on Saturday...
