Safari Rack (Other than Surco, Yakima, and Thule)

Hi all,

Has anyone tried out this roof rack from a1-autoracks?

Proline Safari Rack

I also did searching on eBay and found these (Click on the image to go to the links:

I know that many of you like the Surco, but it is a little pricey for me. I like the last one because of the open front and back. I think it would make loading my two kayaks a lot easier because of the higher sides to hold up the kayaks.

I bought a BVG Adventure Rack with extension and 2 light mounts for less than $200 on ebay from sportsrack. They are brand new and first quality.

I love the rack so far. The diameter of the tubing is small though. Was hoping that it would be same size as Yakima, so I an use Yak accessory. I guess you cannot have the best of both worlds.

I might have to order one of these. Sure beats $400. Is it really flimsy? How did you attach it to the roof rack? Can you post a close up of the attachments?

sorry lots of questions. thanks!

Here is the link to the seller.

Ebay Seller - SportsRack

They are not flimsy at all. It's very solid. It has a universal U-bolt-type mount, that can attach to aero (factory), square (thule), or round (yakima) bars.

I have a complete BVG hitch bike rack, and have been very happy with it. As for the basket, I am very happy so far. I manage to mount my Yakima fairing on the rack. WIthout a fairing, it howls like mad.

I can get you closeup of the mounts later today.

Get the Conferr part number and order it from Summit Racing b/c you get free shipping. The Conferr rack I have on my '99 4Runner was $300 shipped to my door including the floor kit and mount kit. The Conferr stuff will not be listed on the Summit site, but they do carry it.

Definitely not price, really just the amount of attachments available-for the Conferr you can get any one attachment (bike, hi-lift, shovel/axe, tire mount) for about $50, light mounts are way less than that. The biggest benefit for me was that I got 2 bike mounts for $100 for the Conferr and didn't have to go out and buy all the Thule or Yakima bike mount stuff. It may be cheaper if you plan to carry 2 bikes on it, maybe not, I haven't priced the Thule or Yakima bike mounts lately.

There are more pics on my photo album.

I don't think any rack out there can beat the $150 price. Yes the attachments for yakima won't work, but you might be able to come up with some custom adapters. but if you do plan to put that much accessory, I suggest go with the more expensive brands.

for me, I only plan to tie a pair of kayak up on top along with some gears in the basket. bikes go on the hitch rack where I like it.

Well Timber, you originally had a pic of the handmade "e-bay guy's" roof rack which, when I looked a long time ago, were more $ than the Con-Ferrs.

I've a 4'x6' Con-Ferr on a first gen, secured with the adjust-a-mount bolted through the fiberglass.

It's really, really nice and really, really strong.

I just used carriage bolts and put a piece of exterior plywood up there. If you wanted to you could attach front fork style bike mounts (cheaper) straight into the plywood.

Plus...

Whenever I'm getting ready to go somewhere and I need specific items to be secured in specific ways (stove fuel, etc.), I just make a little box or something and bolt straight through the plywood deck.

I can't speak for any other brands, but the straight out toughness of the Con-Ferr is pretty spectacular.

And just a bit of info; the retail prices Con-Ferr lists on their site are far above actual retail. The 4'x6' at four wheel parts is something like $179, retail on the Con-Ferr site is $246.

If you can get to a place to pick one up, then by all means do that. Otherwise, the Summit Racing free shipping is a great suggestion.

Get whatever you think best suits your needs and intended use. I just wanted to chime in with my applause for Con-Ferr. I don't think you'd be disappointed, but, as with anything nice, they do cost the $.

Good luck.

Good idea with the plywood solution.

I have some plans for making custom brackets/mounts for the kayaks on top. I just finished mounting the Yak fairing on my basket using some clamps and brackets.

It looks clean. (and NO i am not trying to make my rack look like a Yak. I just happen to have it from my old setup.)

I got my surco free. My roommate flipped his jeep, and somehow the rack flew about 30 away. he had a tire in it so maybe that's why i don't know. But aside form that guy in the picture, there is another guy on ebay making them. Thats what i was going to get. i would get something without any type of panel or flat surfaces on the front and back, it's like driving with a parachute.
