Driving or Fog Lights
#3
I'd go with PIAA or Toyota fog lamps. Fog lamps help most in some of the most dangerious conditions. Driving lamps are pretty useless in all but good weather conditions. Part of the decision may lie in the weather patterns for your area.

Also, if you are looking for something aftermarket, go with HELLA 500's - available for about $60/pair on ebay and come in either fog or driving beams. they also come with all the wiring, the switch, and the relay. They are the big round one's in the pic... the smaller ones at the edge of the blinker are OEM Toyota fog lights.

I guess I am looking for recommendations. Should I go with driving lights or Fog lights. I live in CT and during the fall and spring it can get pretty foggy out. So with that said fog lights are probably the best option. Now, I would like some suggestions. I drove to a couple of shops today and no one seemed to have anything of High qaulity. I would like something that works in both crappy conditions and clear conditions.
Do the OEM fogs in the bumper work well? I guess I am of thinking the bigger the better. I just bought the runner a month or so and My outback had the factory fog lights which did nothing.
I hope this clarifies what I am looking todo.

If I were you, I'd do the factory fogs first - they provide fill lighting close to the truck and they mount low to the ground in the stock locations. Then if you want more, I'd add some large fog or driving lights like the Hella's. Don't buy the Toyota lights new. You can proball get some used off of this board. Search the classifieds...

I just installed Hella 550s since they fit right in between the bumper and the lower valance and I prefer the rectangle look over the 500s. I figured fogs would be more useful since we do get some good snows and fog around here. I have considered ordering the lower replacement valance for mine from PP which has round light holes and would put driving lights in those since I'd have the best of both worlds plus a little *bling-bling* never hurts.

IMO and from experience (I've driven my mom's '99 Limited) the factory fogs do minimal (but not as bad as some others) as most stock lights do and the aftermarket does sell replacement projectors that fit the stock locations.

I was wondering if I could get some of the rectangle Hella's and mount them in the lower valence in the already outline rectangular slots? I will post pics of the spots I am talkin about if you don't know.
I would go with stock Toyota and then as everybody else said, if you need more light go ahead and get the aftermarket Hella's or PIAA's.

If you are serious about lighting talk with Daniel Stern. I went back and forth with him for several days getting the right lights for my requirements. I have been impressed with him and his knowledge, he knows and what works and doesn't. I drive the back roads of Colorado mountains in some horrific conditions and have been very impressed with his choice of lighting for me.

I'd say both! I would do what bamachem did if I where you. Get the stock fogs to fill in what the Low beams can't take care of and then get some aftermarket driving lights and mount them on the bumper to help the hi beams. You want fogs to be mounted as low as possible and driving mounted as high as possible. I currently have two fog hella 500s on my bumper and am getting 4 hella 500s to go on my roof rack. You Don't need four, I just want to fill up the rack, its an aesthetic thing I guess. Also, I would recomend getting some auxiliry back up lights. This is a great mod and has many purposes. A. It makes backing up in the dark a breeze. B. They come in handy when camping. C. are a great way to get someone off your azz. You don't need fancy lights to do this mod though and recomend just going to autozone and getting some $15-$20. There have been many discusions on this so do a search. There is even a wiring diagram so you can have a switch that has them ON, OFF or automaticly come on with the reverse lights. There are many mounting options. I have a roof rack so I put mine there, but there are a few other places that work well.

I'm using Hella 550 fogs on the front guard and I have 4 55w rectangular spots to go on my roof basket(when I get one). I prefer the look of the rectangular for the rig, IMHO the rounds dont suit the 4runner/hilux surf.
Hella are one of the best out there, there is some other stuff for silly money but the increase is not worth the outlay. And high watt bulbs etc are not legal for road use(in Ireland anyway) they are only for offroad/show use.

All driving lights are for "offroad" use here in the states. Hi beams are for "offroad use" even. All that means is that you have to turn them off when other motorists are comming in the opposite direction. Fog lights you can keep on all the time though.
