Question Removing hubs on 87 4Runner

Hello all,

I’m trying to remove the original manual hubs on my ’87 4Runner in order put on a new set of Warn’s that I picked up. Problem is, I can’t get my old ones off. I took the cap off, and all of the flange nuts, and it won’t budge. Someone told me that it might have “locking cones” on the flange studs, if this is the case, what’s the best way to get it off.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave, look in our Tech section.
There is an article in there on Warn hubs.

It should explain how to get off the cone nuts.

Thanks Corey,

I should have checked the Tech section first.

Looks like I have to keep smack'n them 'till they come off!

Good times,

Dave

Next Step after the hubs

Corey,

I read the tech article and I remeber reading somewhere else that there was another step - something to do with a vacuum line connection. Was that info on your site? Can't remember.

No lines had to be diconnected on mine.

But there is a link on my site on how to disable all the ADD hoses if one wanted to.

You mean the Aisin manual hubs? That is what I'm running right now.

The old ADD hubs I had on before are trail backup hubs in case an Aisin breaks, the ADD hub can be put on to get home.

Oh, you mean the tech article written by Matt.

You will have to ask him if he has a spare set.

I got mine off the 'Net from a guy for $50 US.
They can be found in Toyota graveyards as well.
There are a few in my state, and they do ship.
All these junkyard hubs are usually in good shape.

You just need to follow that "rebuild" article I have linked on my website.
All that entails is stripping it down and cleaning them, and then greasing them, and adding new gaskets before you bolt them on.

One such place in my state that sells the hubs is Nix 99.

hubs

no Dave said he was trying to get his manual hubs off so he could replace them with Warn hubs. I was wondering what he was going to do with the (original hubs) he was trying to get off.:pat:

Oh crap, I am getting old
I had the two Dave's mixed up here

I'm not sure if the ones he has are the good Aisin manuals like I have, or the troublesome Aisin auto hubs, not to be confused with the ADD hubs like I did have where you never have to get out and lock them.

Here is an article on ODW's tech section.

It explains how the above hubs worked.
Bad thing is if you back up on a trail, they unlock on you, hence the need to take them off and replace them with Aisin hubs like I am running now.

Here is a quote from the above article:

Here is the AUTO hub. It can be found on trucks from 1984-1988, and on 4Runners from 1984-1989. Do not confuse this with ADD. AUTO hubs are NOT similar to ADD. The AUTO hub has a clutch inside that will lock the hub when it receives forward movement of the axle. Since the axles are not always spinning with this design, you must come to a COMPLETE stop before shifting into 4WD. Under no circumstances can you shift into 4WD while in motion with the AUTO hubs.

The AUTO hub will unlock after 1/4 turn of the axle in reverse. This is the major flaw to the design. Often on the trail we need to back up in 4WD. Especially if the vehicle is stuck, and we're trying to free it by backing out of the hole it is in. With the AUTO hubs, once you shift into reverse and begin to turn the driveline the hubs will unlock, and you'll be left with only 2WD in reverse. The will eventually lock into 4WD again, but having them unlock on you at all is very troublesome.
There, Scott explained it a lot better than I can. I am willing to bet Dave (from CO.) has that type of hub that unlocks when he backs up.
They are a troublesome unit. Not much fun either if you have to be at a dead stop to lock them in.

I can be going 50 with my hubs and pull the lever into 4WD High, as it is shift on the fly.
Same as with the ADD hubs.

Dave, that article above may help you also since Scott explains how to take off the auto lock hubs and switch to manuals.
With the Warn hubs however, an additional kit has to be bought, not so with the Aisin manual hubs like I have.

Hey David,

That's me! I will be replacing my original MANUAL hubs on my 87 4Runner with a set of Warn's. The originals work fine, but are pretty hard to turn. This is my wife’s vehicle and she has a hard time locking them in. I ended up getting a set of Warn’s for a really good price, so I figured I’d just change them out for her. If I don’t end up beating the old ones up too bad, you are welcome to them.

Dave

Dave (from Colorado),

I'm not familiar with the hubs on an 87 4Runner, so I can't tell you if they have cone washers or not (and unfortunately the manuals I have are for 90-95 Runners). You may want to call your local dealer to see what they recommend. That's actually what I did when I couldn't get my 91 Hubs off.

If you do have cone washers, try squirting some WD-40 or Liquid Wrench on them and let them soak for a few minutes. Bang away on the side of the hub to free them. I've also now read that you can place a socket that's bigger than the circumferance of the cone washer over the washer and bang on that instead of the hub (you may end up screwing up your socket though).

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Matt

from David to Dave lol

i had the add hubs on my 87 but when i bought the truck the internal clutches were bad... so i got the most cost effective i could MileMarker from JC whitney. they stick out too far in my opinion and i have a kinda clicking sound with them so i would like the originals and if any one would be interested in the milemarkers (once i replace them) let me know. by the way they do work great but like i said about an inch taller than stock and clicking sound (when free)

and thanks dave i would like that but let me know what you would like for them (need anything from Germany lol)

are we all clear now lol

Arghhhh, I lost

Good thing I was not betting any of my mod $$$ away
Looks like I would have lost the bet.

So Dave, you do have the Aisin hubs like I do, but yours are just a little stiff to operate.

David (from Germany) if you get them all they probably will need is a good cleaning and grease job from this article I used to tear mine down.

I think we are not confused anymore :bounce2:

You know, I don’t have any idea, I’ll have to look! It’s whatever came stock in ’87. They are getting pretty stiff to operate, I had planned to take them apart & grease them, but then I ran across a set of Warn premium hubs still in the box for $25 from my neighbor who sold his Toyota before he got a chance to put them on.

The 4Runner has pretty low miles, and I bought it from the original (female) owner, so the hubs probably haven’t had a lot of use and abuse on them.

Yes, the 87 should have the stupid cone washers. Plenty of penetrating oil, and gentle with the hammer (OK, not so gentle)
