Couple of questions.

Hi there, first off I did search for this stuff but i couldnt quite find what i was looking for but i did look. My first question is I'm not sure what generation my 4runner is. It is an 89 with the 3.0L and a 5 speed. And second I was also wondering what size of motor (preferably chevy) could i put in instead of fixing the head gasket. I was hoping to get a 305 or possibly a V6 chevy in it. Nothing too big, just enough to give me a little more power and also, if i did swap the motor to something a little bigger would i have to change the tranny as well? If someone could help me out, it would be great.

Does it have a removable top? Then it would be a first gen, not removable then it would be a second gen, search motor swaps all kinds will fit with mod but it depends on how much you want to mod things and i believe yes you would have to swap the tranny or get an adapter at the very least.

Yea i knew 350's were, but im not sure i want to go that big, but the 4.3 sounds like a good idea though. Would you happen to know if i would need to change anything else? (axles, tranny, tcase etc.) thanks again

My buddy has a 350 in his 87 Single Cab. That thing is a MONSTER.

I also had a 350 in one of my e30 BMW's. Same story. Pulled up next to an e46 m3 at a light, he laughed, as I smoked him. 2+ car lengths.

What I am getting at, you can get some serious power out of that engine.

1: Why do you want to put in a chevy engine? Why not put in a larger Toyota motor? Whats the point of buying/driving a Toyota if it doesnt have a Toyota heart?
2: first gen 4runners are '84.5-'89. second gen are '90-'95/ Its possible to have a second gen be BUILT in '89 but its really a second gen because its a '90 MODEL YEAR. The model year sometimes starts as early as September.

I am putting a chevy in it because I have easy access to parts that i may need. I can get just about everything i need next to nothing, provided my uncle has it in his junk yard and i got my 4runner for free and i just like chevy.
