ask and ye shall receive (that is, receive the usual invitation to search, duh! and the odd wikipedia linky hahahaha)
it's probably my fault for not being as explicit as i needed to, so here it goes:
my budget is very limited (probably limited to what i can find on craigslist or very cheap new) but fortunately so are my intended uses. i want the cb mainly to listen to truckers on my way to work (i've got a two hour round trip twice a week) and, eventually, to ask them for permission to tailgate. so far i've seen the walmart cobra mentioned by seanmearse and a few handheld models but i'm not really sure if i need to go with the wired in/antenna set up or if i could get away with a handheld for my purposes.
i asked about other forums because i'm sure there's a lingo that goes with CBs and, again, being a total newb, i know none of it. the only thing i know about CBs comes from watching the dukes of hazzard and smokey and the bandit so that's probably not enough
i will nonetheless search within the yotatech communication thread, thanks for pointing that out

Get the cheapest radio you can find and the best antenna you can afford. A cheap basic radio with a good antenna will work a lot better than a fancy radio with a cheap antenna.
And I don't know about your part of the world but up here more and more truckers are switching to VHF, the CB band is almost dead most days.
