I am getting ready to drop the transmission pan on my 97 4Runner (5VZFE) because I am getting some leakage where the pan meets the transmission. It has slowly leaked ever since I had the pan dropped last time (apparently he didnt torque the pan bolts correctly or use the right gasket).

I stopped by autozone and picked up a pan gasket for the 5VZFE (I always thought to use FIPG for this but bought this gasket since it was only 5 bucks). It appears to be a black cork-like gasket shaped to fit the pan.

So my question is - should I use this gasket I picked up from Autozone, or should I use permatex "the right stuff" or a different brand FIPG?

I am sick of having this leak and having to add trans fluid every few months! Any help is appreciated. I already checked out THIS diy, so I plan to follow proper toque specs and sequence.

Toyota FIPG from the dealer. Expensive, but it won't leak again.

 

x2. I learned my lesson the 1st time I dropped my pan. I got dooped on an Autozone cork gasket too. I torqued the bolts in the right order to the 40 and then 65 in/lbs and it was leaking the next day. Cost me a lot more time than $$, but it was annoying.

BTW, don't ask Autozone what kind of sparkplugs to use either - they will give you some that the sticker on your engine specifically forbids!

 

I'm running autozone gasket, no problems yet.

It appears as though we have conflicting experiences with the Autozone cork trans pan gaskets. Anyone else care to chime in?

 

Usually, when I get a filter, and gasket set, I just toss the gasket in the trash, permatex, or the yota goop is best.... cork gaskets are junk IMHO.... theres a reason toyota didnt use them in the first place.

 

To each his own, I use autozone parts because my buddy works there and he lets me use his discount. I don't recommend brakes from there though unless you like the squeaks. Alternators are a bit iffy. I've gone through 3 of them to get one that works, but being an auto tech by trade it only takes me 10 minutes to change them out.

 

So I think I might just try the FIPG. Anyone have the item number for the Toyota stuff?
