I have

hey
i bought a new wood trim kit from burtmanindustries.com and to apply it i had to remove the old wood kit and i didnt try any tricks but just peeling it off and then rubbing it with my thumb to get the remnant double sided foam tape off. but as far as kits i would say burtman makes the nicest ones ive seen.

hey

hey
yeah maybe something like a small knife or something to pry it off but be carefull not to scratch the areas that wont be covered by the new kit, i made that mistake in a few places but a little black paint fixes that.

Ric,

Why don't you trade with someone with just the black? That way you both benefit without possibly damaging your woodgrain and black plastic underneath?

I don't think the woodtrim comes off, on my dash it looks like its painted on or something. I think you're better off painting the trim pieces in black.

Ric,

You know, my brother might want to trade. However, he as a 2WD Automatic.

If the plastic that surrounds the shifter has wood grain on it, then this wont work.

However if it does not, then this might work. Could you send me pics of your interior pieces w/ the wood?

Also, is this factory installed wood trim? Or is it aftermarket? if so, where did the wood kit come from?

I'll contact my brother and we'll go from there.

Bob

Ric, you are doing exactly what I have done to my '98 Ltd. I ain't a wood person too so I have them all changed to the SR5 matte black. I just recently sold my original wood kit on eBay.

However, I didn't do the conversion myself, a local gadget installer did everything for me. Roughly a 20 - 30 min. job I would say.

i too have gotten rid of the factory wood pieces. i exchanged the dash, steering colum, gauge colum, and shifter piece to the stock SR5 trim.

i still have the door panel and A/C vents in wood, but i can deal with that.

i bought my pieces from a member who re-did his interior in wood and from a dealer from www.car-part.com

Two things to note. The SR5 WOOD TRIM CAN BE PEELED OFF. Th LIMITED WOOD TRIM CANNOT BE PEELED OFF. The Limited models have wood trim that is molded and they are all one piece. The only real way to get rid of wood in a limited is to REPLACE the pieces. Sr5 models with factory wood kits have wood that is stuck on with an adhesive backing.

It would hellp to Heat up the pieces with a hairdryer before you pull. This will make them less brittle when you pull them off. Take your time when prying it off. There will be some adheasive residue that comes off easily if you rub it with your thumb. You just have to be very careful and remove small sections at a time.

You can also use 3m adhesive/tar cleaner - comes in a small tin can from PepBoys, $3. It will not affect the Oak or Gray areas, but does dissolve the black color, so you have to be careful to only apply it to areas you know you will recover with a new trim. Then you want to go over everything with the isoproply alcohol.

Here's a nice pic of the real carbon from Phongs 4runner:

re-did the whole interior while I was at it

The Limited wood looks a lot better than the SR5 stuff. It looks like a kit and doesn't fill in the gaps. If you have the SR5 wood, check into getting the Limited version from a junkyard, it looks 313.6% better.
