Radiator Explosion

Hey guys,
I was driving home yesterday for about an hour and all of a sudden I hear a pop and antifreeze went everywhere. I pulled over immediately and I let everything cool for a few minutes, and I popped the good to see a huge cut on the top of the radiator. It basically blew out like a tire. I then noticed a GM logo on the radiator and figured that was the problem.
My truck is a 93 with a 22RE

Is it normal to replace our radiator with a GM part?

What would cause this? I thought the cap was supposed to relieve pressure if too high.

Go to Radiator Barn, you can get a new 3 core radiator for your truck for 195.00 dollars, i bought a radiator from them about six months ago, and its a good part and i would buy from them again if i ever need another radiator.

My T100 was built in Japan, and my factory radiator is branded GM.

ive seen people put S-10 (4.3) radiators in there 3-4 core i think, and i think they pretty much bolt up, would prolly be the reasoning behind it

Nope. Not unless they slipped it in during the head gasket recall replacement, or steering rod recall replacement. GM and Toyota have been working together on some things since 1983:

Good time for a aluminum radiator from ebay. I put one in my 85 and it cools awesome. Its about $180
If the wrong cap was installed or the cap went bad it could have caused it

Mine has a GM rad

My '97 Japan made T100 says GM on the radiator. My son and I had to drive in heavy traffic on the hotest day of the year so far. And, of course, I ran the AC. The temp gauge was just below the red and I was sweating a coolant blowout. We finally gave up the AC until we got up to highway speeds.

I plan to flush the system to see if that helps.

GM probably stands for 'Gyosho Mushi' or some stuff (stuff not being the word I wanted to use ).

I think the best deal out there right now on a good oem type all-metal radiator is the CSF sold by autohausaz.com for $163-225 depending on whether you have an automatic that needs the integrated trans fluid cooler.

I've not seen one, but from the pics it looks like a nice radiator, just like stock, and autohausaz is a great vendor - they don't sell bad parts, in my experience.

Better test the pressure after you get a new radiator in there........I'm going with blown head gasket/cracked head or defective rad cap.

Astuck thermostat can also build enough pressure to split your tank. ONLY toyota thermostats work properly in our trucks. Have you noticed any superheating? (i.e. when you start driving a cold engine and see the temp gauge go beyond normal then drop back down.) This can happen with aftermarket thermostates .. even stants.

My runner did the same thing. it blew half of the top tank out. It was crazy!! but at the same time I think the engine finally let loose at about the same time cause after I started it again to limp it off the road it was knocking so I jerked the motor out and drive train and swapped with a 4.3 vortec

dont just look at the gm logo and think that is the problem. its a radiator...gm or not..and if it "blew up" or simply cracked in the top, this is usually from excess pressure in your cooling system. i would have your system pressure checked. you most likely have a blown head gasket. exhaust gas is going into the water jackets, which is increasing the pressure. which caused your radiator to blow up

yota parts are best but aftermarket parts usually work fine. just dont expect them to last as long

Please explain why a GM rad won't work. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for your reply.


For the OP, I got a nice rad from Autozone that is all metal that worked great. It's a readyrad brand and all copper. I also ran a 180 degree stant tstat that worked great too.

The previous owner replaced the Head Gasket less than 2,000 miles ago. Maybe he did not do something right. He was supposedly an actual "mechanic". Because of that I check my temp and oil pressure every few minutes as I'm driving and they both stay at the good point on the gauges. And I'm pretty sure the gauges work because the temp takes a while to get to the mid point and the oil presure move around with throttle.
Hopefully it's just a freak thing and I'll check the pressures once I get a new one in. Luckily it's not my daily driver.
The GM thing was just a joke guys.
