I have a 22r carbureted 2wd truck that has been running great. Today I pull into work and smell some anti-freeze. I look down and there is a pretty good puddle and a steady drip, drip, drip coming from the firewall area. Nothing visible up top from a quick glance. When I slid under I could see the bellhousing was pretty wet and it was dripping off the trans.

I know its hard to diagnos without more info...but, I am hoping someone can give me a couple pointers on what to check out when I get home tonight. Maybe its a heater hose or something? Any help is appreciated. I really haven't gotten a chance to look at it very close yet.

The heater control valve went bad on my truck and leaks, there only available at toyota for about $100.

 

First guess: the little horseshoe-shaped water bypass hose under the intake plenum.

 

It could also be the EGR crossover plate on the back of the head. You cannot see it from the top, but its directly below the valve cover and blocks off a large coolant passage.

It's not the expense of the parts, it's the pain in your @$$ it will be to get to the leak~

 

Yea, The time and pain in the a@@ is right. I'm about due to pull this thing in and check it out. Pretty much every fluid is seeping out at some place or another, now coolant is added to that list. I have a very leaky PS line someplace. Looks like it is coming out the steering box itself.

Mine is old and leaking but i didn't know what the hell it was to replace it, and i think the last shop that looked at it cut a bunch off and reattached it (poorly) so it doesn't look anything like any of the replacement hoses...

 

basically, yes. I had the same stupid problem on my 3vze. MF'er to get to, but if you so much as take it off for inspection there is absolutely no reason to put the same piece back on! What lazy morons. That should have been 1 hour of mechanic's labor (countless time and skinned knuckles for the layman, honestly, its a genuine PITA) and a $10-$25 hose depending on where you are. You have to get a pre-bent hose because otherwise it will crimp in the middle of the sharp 180 degree bend and thus be useless. Kick said mechanic in the testicles for their shoddy work and never pay them money again. Look for ASE certified on the wall, if they don't have it, don't go there. If they do, they should stand by the quality of work and honestly shouldnt put the same rotten old hose back on by principal. Good luck!

thing with that little horseshoe is I wouldn't think it to leak underneath the firewall as much as directly underneath the intake manifold onto the main crossmember on the passenger side. If its really coming out the bottom right near the firewall, I would check out those hoses along the firewall as there are plenty of culprits along there to leak as well.

 

I fixed the powers teering pressure hose, so now it does not leak PS fluid. I filled the coolant and started to diagnose the coolant leak and the damn thing would not leak a drop. I have been driving it now for 3 weeks and not a drop of coolant. I am guessing it will probably come back, but for now I will drive it locally as is and visit here when the leak persists. Thanks for all the heads up on the little "horse shoe" hose. _scott

 

Thanks NYC, that is the same damn hose. Now that i see another one, they definitely put the old one back on with a new clamp...FAIL. doing it myself from now on, seems like the only way to know it's done right. I reclamped the loose end, then the other end started leaking, prolly from bending it around to get a clamp on a 20 year old hose!

now, to find a new one for less than $30...

sounds like the same problem with my friends 22re it just pours coolant we thought it could of been a soft or freeze plug
