I am starting to make plans to tackle the rust on my 4Runner body.

So I have this....


And I am thinking about just cutting it all off like this (blue line):


I have seen a couple guys on this forum do this, but on their trucks. Just seeing if anyone with a 2nd gen 4Runner has done this and what it looks like. I also will be installing an AOR rear bumper. I am sure there will be a gap but wanted to visualize how much and if it's going to look crappy.

I'm not sure what it'll look like but I plan on doing the same...In fact it's almost there and I have not started cutting yet. I'm sure it'll look fine



That crease is all rust and there is a bit hole there. I'm going to use some duct work to seal it off after I cut it up to the line.

 

WOW! I thought I had it pretty bad! Keep me updated on yours and I will update this thread as I start hacking away.

 

I probably will not be able to tackle this for a month or so. The lil lady wants me to work on the house some...but I'll post here my progress or I'll link it to you somehow. don't want to hijack your progress...

This thing has a ton more cancer than I thought it did. I had to replace both lower control arms cuz they rusted out. I have a hole in the rear axle just next to the bolt that holds the brake line, rusted through, never seen an axle rust out.

 

Glad I live in California where crap dont rust.

It's a good trade off because we don't need special cats or other emission related equipment where I am at. I would also assume living near the ocean all that salt water would cause some sort of oxidation.

 

Only on non coated metal.
But I live 30 + miles away from the ocean, so it doesnt do much.

 

How good of a welder are you, or do you know someone that can weld? Cut it out, and weld new sheet metal in if you are worried about the gap with a new bumper. Take care of the rust before it gets worse. I am glad I now live in Coastal South Carolina and dont have to worry about road salt, but if I go to the beach, or drive anywhere I come across saltt water, it get power washed. When I was in WV, After every winter and in between salt used on the highways, I went to a car washed and washed salt off everything.

 

I live in colorado and things rust a lot here too (mostly because of the salty roads in winter)

How does your rust get so bad? Not washing? I have a few small rust spots I've sanded away and patched up with some spraypaing.

 

i would grind the crap out of it inside and out and see what you are left with.then i would use rust inhibitor paint inside and outside / undercoat the out of that area and enamel on top of that to make it hard as an eggshell.

that's what i've successfully done with our's.........better to keep an original body line / angle than to try to re-create one.....i would think.

then again, i don't weld..........if you do , lop it off and put some new metal on.

This is why washington and oregon are some of the better places in the west
no goofy laws, and no salty winters.

 

I am not the original owner of the car. I am the 3rd, the original owner resided in the Poconos and the 2nd owner pretty much didn't care as long as it ran, so this is where it collected all the rust.

 

that's why Florida is the best.... no special cats or other equipment, no goofy laws, no rust, and best of all hardly any winter at all, let alone a salty one!


there used to be a 1st gen pickup that ran around my town that's got annoyingrob beat.... but it's been probly 6 months or more since i've seen it

 

As for mine, I have no idea how many people beat this thing up. All I know is I got a good deal on it and I'm going to do what ever I need to do to keep her going. Probably Look something like Annoyingrob before too long.

 

yeah, but the heat, humidity, and thunderstorms this time of the year SUCK!!!

But, you can keep adding clothes to keep warm, there is a limit to the removal. (but maybe not in florida, unless your fat)
