1st gen what would you do? (engine rebuild question)

ok so I just picked up an 86 4runner w/ a 22re motor the odometer reads 340k I have paperwork saying the engine was rebuilt at 265k so about 75k on the rebuilt motor. Well it was dumping oil out of the front main seal and when I went to replace it it was hard as a rock and so was the oil pump o ring, on the work order for the engine rebuild they have a full gasket kit so is it likey for this seal to get rock hard in 75k? It also wore a pretty nice groove in the pulley. So now I'm second guessing the rebuild. So I pull it and take it apart and replace what needs to be replaced or just trust that it was actually rebuilt? It also has a tick/light knocking sound when you first start it up but as soon as you give it a rev it goes away. Ideas? opinions?

normally a knock at startup means low oil, but i would go with a heaver weight oil 10.40 or somethin, alot of people atually use rotella 15.40 also..if ya got the bones to rebuild it, its worth the peace of mind, if you dont just driver her locally till you can trust her....

If you have the money rebuild it or drop a new/re-maned engine in it. I just put one from JEGS in my 89 and I love it. It has more pep than it has had since I bought it 4 years ago, the ever present knock that almost made it sound like a diesel is gone, I went from 17 mpg to 23 mpg and now I would truly trust it to take me anywhere I want to go.

if ya rebuild it throw a 268* cam in it from engnbldr..and get all your parts you can from him..hes really cheap and has EXCELLENT customer service..Ted's really an AWESOME guy..he'll answer ANY question you have about your truck..LOTS OF EXPERIENCE.lol

on a side note..i rebuilt my 22R with the 261* cam..cost around $1300 for parts and labor..(parts was close to $800..thats with clutch kit and a few other things)..the rest was labor.....

would i do it again?...hell no...i would swap in a Vortec 4.3 with the trick aluminum intake manifold...or i would go with a buick V6...

they both get close to the same gas mileage in our little trucks as my 22R does..and it has a crapload more power. stock 4.3 has like 190hp..thats 2x's what my 22r has..lol..then if you get it bored..cam'd..Megasquirt it..yea your lookin at close to 250hp..maybe more..lol

or you could do what all these other guys say and swap in a 3.4..i've heard its a wiring nightmare though..

good luck with whatever you decide to do..

o ya and i run castrol GTX 10w30...was told by Toyota to run 20w40 though??? i cant remember why..and i know that my '80 ran A HELLUVA LOT BETTER on 20w oil that 10w..lol
