Unhappy help, if it sounds like a rod bearing is it a rod bearing???

ok, so my girlfriend was driving her 94 runner up to tahoe when she started to hear a knocking noise from the engine. 3.0 v6, manual 5spd, 4x4. No engine light and temp was normal. The car ran normal as well. she pulled over to check, didn't notice anything and drove about 10 to 15 miles to toyota dealer. The dealer said they could hear a pinging noise in the top and bottom of the motor and that the engine was bad and would need to be replaced. The car was towed home. So, any ideas if this could be anything but a rod bearing going?? Thanks!

What engine?

post up a sound clip. My '88 4runner developed a knocking sounding noise, I posted on here, everyone said it was a rod/main bearing so I sold it. Ended up needing a better tune-up and the valves adjusted.

so you found out after you sold it that it was not a bearing/main problem? thats a bummer.

First off the STEALERSHIP is trying to get a ass load of money for a job that would cost maybe $1000 if you rebuild it yourself so I would go for a second opinon just to make sure then weigh your options.

Thanks, that is what I was worried about. She took it into them and they didn't do much and just said you need a new motor. I will get a second opinion from an independent shop.

Smart idea , look around and you can find reman motors if needed like this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3VZE-...Q5fAccessories

or you can get a complete rebuild kit like this

http://engnbldr.com/toyota_30_v6.htm

do the work yourself and save enough money doing it yourself rather then letting the STEALERSHIP to buy the engine above and a couple drinks
