So yesterday I was just driving along, and all of the sudden my gas guage Plummets to below empty, and the gas light starts flashing. So I stop, turn off the car, restart, it hovers around half a tank, then same thing. So I knew I had half a tank so I continue with my day.

Today, it just goes up to way above full, then down to below empty, and stays there.

Only thing different than normal driving was I was towing a trailer for the first time, with the trailer lights hooked up. The trailer wiring is fine, and I was using the factory connector.


Ideas?

Ive heard of many problems in the year range around 99.. for their gas guages. Search to find more info.. Maybe gas guage malfunction, etc......

 

yes I do understand the search function, and do use it extensivly when I have a better internet connection, and I'm not posting off my phone. but thanks...

it is a common occurrence with the 3rd gen Runners.

If yours never got taken in for the Tech Service Bulletin it is likely too late. Just be religious in resetting at least one trip odometer and refill way before you need to. You will learn to gauge your range conservatively to avoid walking for gas.

Many of us typically fill up at 13 some gallons or thereabouts and the tank holds 18.1 but can not or should not be run completely dry.

 

Searching forums on a phone is a PITA.... i wouldn't want to use the search function either.

 

I have had the same issue with my 99 4Runner. As was stated above, use your trip odometer at fill up. I did a ton of research on the issue and the repair is very costly. It's one of those things that is not worth the cash to repair IMHO. I just refill the tank at 175 miles.
