Free Truck

So my uncle just gave me his 86 Toyota reg cab 4x4. I towed it home and fired it up. It runs, but isnt firing on all four. I pulled the third plug wire back and it doesnt change the rough idle at all. I sprayed a little starting fluid in the cylinder and put the plug back in and it fired and purred great for about three seconds then went back to crap. Do I have a bad injector? Should I change all four? This truck has been a ranch truck for the last ten years and hasnt had much work done to it other than a rebuilt motor and head about five years ago. What all should I go through before I put this thing on the road and hit some trails? Thanks for any help

Welcome to YotaTech!!!!!

How long has this thing been sitting? I would change everything you want to put money into. Like cap/rotor, plug wires...etc. Just to start.

Good luck with the project!!! If you have wierd issues or general questions, please use the Search function!!!

try draining the gas and putting fresh stuff in... with a bottle or 2 of injector cleaner... x2 on the new plugs and wires route as well.

Sorry guys, i forgot to say that the first thing I did when I got it home was to change the cap, rotor and wires, and plugs. Should I drain the radiator, ie,,, we live in arizona and it is 110 right now. I drove it around a while and it didnt overheat at all i just want to get as much done as possible to minimize breakdowns on the trail. Should I try running some injector cleaner through it or just change them out. It has 250k miles on it

If the starting fluid helped stabilize the idle, then I'd guess that there's an injector problem on the #3 cylinder. They do wear out, get plugged up and fail.

oh well in that case you should probably look at that injector. If the truck has been sitting around, then a good flush and fill of the coolant wont' hurt. I would.

If you want to be sure it's the injector, trade positions with another and see if the lean misfire moves. If it does not, then the problem is in the connections or wiring. If the misfire follows the injector, then either replace or have them cleaned.

Try some injector cleaner and see if that works first. And I second draining the fuel and putting fresh in if it has been sitting a while.

Update

Ok guys here is the update, we took out the radiator and flushed it and also took the fuel rail apart. there are two sensors on the front by the fuel rail that are broken off. one appears to be a temp sensor but I dont know what the other is. I am going to order new ones tommorow if i can figure out what second one is. then there were some loose connectors on the injectors. i took it all apart and cleaned everything then put it back together. It runs great now except there is a slight fuel leak on the top of one injector. I think I might not have got it back in all the way. is there any way to make sure they stay in place?

The injector o-rings are probably dried out and not sealing now that they were disturbed. A dab of engine oil on them helps with reassembly.

Ok, so i took apart the fuel rail and one of the injector seals was tore in half. I replaced it and put it all back together and she runs better now. How do I time this thing? the last thing I timed was a 72 nova so i dont know where to start on this bad boy. Also, does anyone know what the sensor is that is right nest to the water temp sensor, mine is broke off and i cant figure it out. Both the cv boots are ripped on this thing and who knows how long they have been like that. If I take the shafts out how do i tell if they need to be replaced? Thanks guys
