My 4runner's engine is running a bit rough

I was coming home today (50 mile drive) and on I25 my 4runner died!

First of all it's an 85 4runner with an 87 22RE.

It all started about 15 miles from home. I hit a red light and stopped. When I sped up again it seemed like I was really lacking power. After another 4 or 5 miles on the interstate the engine just refused to work any more. I pulled over and let it rest a minute.

When I started it again, the engine almost doesn't want to run. It was missing a couple of cylinders and I had to keep the pedal down a bit for it to stay running. I checked all loose wires, fluids and looked for leaks. Nothing worth noting.

After it cooled down a bit it started up OK and ran on all 4 cylinders. I put a load on it and it bogged down again and wouldn't run.

Anyone got any ideas?

does the 22re have the ignitor i know mine went out and did the same excat thing but it died and wouldnt crank back up. the only thing i can possibly think of is to check all of your fuses and check fuel pump, the entire iginition system. i hope some of that helps im sure someone else can can give you a better answer

I dont know much about 22r's or re's but maybe u have some wires hangin somewhere that are getting hot. if a wire gets to hot it can stop conducting electricity. i.e. one time my spark plug wires fell out of the clip and hit a hose thing on the power steering resevoir eventually the wire got so hot it made that cylinder miss fire. or not fire at all. Or check the o2 censor wires

I would start with the fuel system, replace the fuel filter and see if that helps, if not then crack the fuel line at the cold start injector and see if you have fuel presure, if not then the fuel pump might be bad. If thats not it then it could be something electrical.

Hmm... step on the pedal and it misfires?

fuel filter
spark plugs
spark plug wires
distributor
distributor cap
igniton rotor
vacuum leak
throttle position sensor
air flow meter
short in wiring
intake duct
compression

hope I helped you narrow it down.
