Bad Deal... 3.4L gives up

I bought a 2001 Toyota 4Runner that had 63000 miles on it, great condition purred like a beauty, and it checked out about six months later I had put about 10000 miles on it keeping it maintained. One day got on the freeway and started getting up to speed and a loud Bang! resounds from the engine followed by fast, loud, and damaging knocking. Without any warning the engine had thrown a rod through the block and blew a hole in her oil pan. Does anyone know of any part failures for these engines or can I stick with the assumption that the truck was mistreated prior to my ownership!

WOW, rare I'd say. I think this is only the 2nd time I've heard of a 3.4 throwing a rod through the block but it's the 2nd in like 2 weeks or so. Sorry man.

i have never heard of it. Matter of fact--when my engine builder pulled down my motor he said all the internals looked great.....At 165K and i was running 10K Mobile1 oil changes. Didnt have to do anything to the crank and i dont think he needed to resize the rods and etc...

I think it was just a fluke--it happens sometimes.

Its like two people out of how many motors?

The motor swap is not a bad job though. Got the right stuff it can be done in a weekend easy...

There are 3.4 motors everywhere. Throw it in and move on.

Perhaps the previous owner ran it low, Jiffy lube left the plug out...who knows.

I have thought about picking up a 3.4 motor for cheap, just for insurance.
