1990 4runner w/EFI acts like carbureted

1990 4runner,3.0 V6,5 speed,200+ miles.(bought very inexpensively a month ago for project)You must repeatedly pump the accelerator in order for it to start, cold or hot. Then after 30 or 40 engine revolutions it sluggishly starts. After a couple minutes of idling it runs ok.I never smell fuel. There is fuel at the pressure regulator. When gas cap is removed, and key on,should you be able to hear the fuel pump through the fiiler neck? Can anyone offer a suggestion? Thanks

if you turn the key on, the pump should pressurize the system sounds to me like an efi fuse or something of the sort has gone out, not allowing it to pressurize before you start it

Hi yoterr, Is the EFI fuse in the drivers kick panel or in the fuseblocks under the hood?

The EFI fuse is under the hood. But it's not likely to be the fuse since the engine will start. Also the fuel pump only runs when the key is turned to crank the engine and also when the engine is running and there's enough air flow to activate the switch contacts in the air flow meter.

Under the hood is the diagnostic check connector. On the bottom of the lid should be a diagram showing which terminal is which. Make a jumper and insert it between the Fp and +B terminals then go try starting the truck. If it starts right up, then it may be an issue with the circuit opening relay, ignition switch or wiring.

Anyhow, let us know.

I tried the jumper and no change.Same old stuff.Should I be looking at the fuel pump or somewhere else in the fuel system?

I found the problem! The air intake tube that clamps to the throttle body had a big chunk of plastic missing on it.It was on the bottom where it couldn't be seen.It was letting way too much air in and gave incorrect readings to the MAF sensor.I put a used one on and started right up with no gas pedal action! Thanks to all of you who replied.
