Ever heard your fuel pump???

So weird thing today, for the first time since i owned this truck(92 3.0) i hear my fuel pump kick on when the key was in the on position. I know on other cars/bikes i had when the key is on position you hear the fuel pump kick on. I know when i bought the truck and changed the fuel filter when i went to start it i would prime the pump by turning the key on position then off like 5 times but me and my bud didnt hear any noise from the pump we even listened really close by the tank and nothing. I just left it as that, then today for the first time i go to turn it on and hear a noise and sure enough fuel pump and it stayed on for a while i even turned off the key i was scared. So what do you guys and gals think my fuel pump is going out + i thought maybe so, but when I priced one i was like forget about it its working. sorry for goin on, does any one else hear there pump kick on every time the key is in the on position...... oh yea i been having simptoms of low fuel pressure......i think....

Yoda,

I have an 87 runner 22re and i just replaced my fuel pump. got a brand new denso and installed it, luckly in the runner there is an acess door that you can get to the pump from inside, i did not check the old one for noise but when i put the new one in it did have a bit of a hum to it, how ever you dont hear any noise outside next to the tank or when the access door is closed, after talking to someone at my local toyota dealership, they said the pump will make that little hum as its pumping fuel, not sure what kind of noise your hearing but if your having low fuel pressure that could definatly be part of the issue. hope this helps and good luck!

I just had this problem myself. If you have a 22RE, I think you should check your Circuit Opening Relay. It's probably bad and causing the problem.

Here is a link to the thread where I got some good advice.

Edit - Fixed boneheaded typo. Thanks scuba!

When you turn the key, the pump is supposed to run for a few seconds then shut off. Then, when the AFM opens (the motor starts sucking in air), the fuel pump should turn on again.
