I have a 94 2wd toyota pickup with a 22re and a manual trans and I'm wanting to upgrade the gears in the rear. I currently have 3.58 gears and a 7.5" ring gear and I would like to have some 4.10 gears. How can I achieve this?

 

you should be able to take the gears out of a IFS front diff. I believe they are 7.5in. When you do get the 4.10s you'll like them. I have them in my 2wd and i run 31's and its awesome!!!

check craigslist... i see em on here all the time for less than 20 bucks...

 

How did you get 3.58's?

I have a stock 1wd and I have 4.10's.

 

Post up your location and maybe one of us with a front diff laying around can help you.

If it were me, I'd probably swap in an entire rear 4x4 axle. That way you get the gears you want and the strength of the bigger axle and gears.

 

thats not as easy as it sounds. you would have to cut off and weld on spring perches because of the 2wd being spring under axle and then you would also be 5 lug in front and 6 in rear.

So is anyone sure if gears from an ifs front will work in a 2wd rear? I am planing on some larger tires for my 2wd and i have a stock diff sitting here from my 4wd.

I also have the 7.5 inch 3rd and 3.58 gears. With 30" tires, I shift into 4th at 60 - 65 MPH. Forget about using OD unless you want to haul a$$ while going downhill. One good thing about it, I can maintain 70 MPH up long hills with ease.

I have been trying to find a cheaper way to do this rather than the $540 for a new 3rd.

91Toyota, how did you end up with 4.10s? Is that a 7.5" or 8" 3rd?

 

There's always the 8" 2wd rear axle, which would be the easiest route to go if the OP can find one.

 

I'm in the same situation as yayfortrees. Definitely need answer for the 4wd front 3rd member ring and pinion sizes. Would be much better than other alternatives.

 

I obtained my 4.10's from a 2wd auto truck for my 94 2wd. Also an easy option.

 

I PM'ed ZUK to see if he had any thoughts on this.

 

Find a V6 2wd truck, 4 cyl with a 4 speed, turbo trucks or a single wheel 1 ton and you will have a 8" rear 3rd with a 5 lug setup and it is basically a bolt in procedure. I'm talking about the whole axle. I never seen a 4.10 7.5 REAR diff. Or you can use the front of the IFS for the 4.10 gears which will be your easiest way to obtain 4.10's.

What was the code, do you remember?

 

Sorry don't know, I used the paint code on the end of the pinion flange shaft to figure it out. Pink is 4.10 (supposed to be)

FYI (no one in particular), I have found one 2WD V6 truck, that was running a 7.5" 3rd. It was a 5 spd (R150). Unfortunately, not all V6 trucks ran 7.5" 3rds.

JamesD, just so we're all on the same page, a 3rd member out of an IFS diff will directly replace the 7.5" 3rd from the rear?

Also, if I find a stock 4WD truck with a 4.10 gear code, will that mean the front 3rd will also be a 4.10?

Thanks everyone. Until this thread, I thought I was going to have to live with my gears until I came up with the money to buy the new 3rd. This could be a much better alternative.

 

Ya...the front low pinion 7.5" gears are the same fit as the 2WD low pinion 7.5" rears....there are a few 2WD trucks that have a ridiculously low ratio of 3.1 or something like that that have a different pinion offset due to the oversized pinion head....but the higher ratio 2WD's have the same 3rd member offset as the front 4X4 gears.
