2500RPM, moderate acceleration, transmission clicking (like relays)

Hi all,

Something I have noticed for a while, that I never asked about on here. when driving, under moderate acceleration, i notice that the transmission makes some sort of clicking sound. I have a feeling that its some sort of shifting relay or actuator, but It sounds pretty loud. It has happened for years. any idea what it is?

It kind of reminds me of a blow off valve kind of sound, without the air pressure blow off. Or maybe vacuum solenoid?

TIA
Nick

it also could be valve tick....my 4runner makes a loud ticking sound when its cold or under acceleration roughly 1500-2000 rpms but then it stops ticking at around 2500-3000....

The transmission should be fairly quiet. You may have a loud injector.

Does it happen cold and hot? Just cold? Can other people hear it?

its not a valve tick or injector, its definitely trans related.

I say this, because it isn't consistent like a rhythm. typically a valve or injector would have consistent time before the noise.

Have you checked your exhaust manifold? Notorious for cracking and when they do there is a "ticking." Put your hand around there and have someone punch the gas (a rev will do). Feel for air. Leaks are usually harder to hear when the RPM's are higher but when under low to moderate RPM's you usually can hear it with the window down.

This can be amplified if you park next to a wall or a concrete barrier or something and hit the gas and let off. It will do it whether it's in neutral or in gear. If it doesn't do it in neutral, disregard this post, because a leak can be heard anytime there is air movement

A manifold leak will have a rhythm also. seems kinda random.

5sp or Automatic?

I've noticed when I get on mine hard it makes a clicking noise that sounds like its coming from the tranny. No clue as to what it is.
