manual hub?

can i drive on the street in 2wd with hubs locked and not hurt them. 87 4runner ifs y/n aisin hubs thanxs

You won't hurt them. They take more abuse when drive is being sent through them in 4wd, so just spinning in 2wd is fine. It's making your cv's spin, though, and they can wear out over time, so why do you need to run with 'em locked?

That mostly says it..

If your truck is lifted and your cvs are at a bad angle you might tear a boot

I know people who live where it snows do this in the winter incase they need 4wd at any given time, but its the end of may, I dont see any reason to do it..

yes its ok for town driving...but do NOT...i repeat DO NOT exceed about 40mph with them locked...i did that...and my front driveshaft flew apart and busted my T-case..so...be careful..and unless its realllllyy snowy outside or something...just leave em unlocked...its alot safer

i've definately learned my lesson on that subject

Ok, good point camo...I stupidly assumed he had a similar system to my add stuff that kept the driveshaft from spinning. Although, your driveshaft probably should've been able to handle that. Still comes down to the same thing: Why?

your putting un needed wear on the drivetrain because its spinning all the time. and worse gas mileage because its taking extra power to turn everything.

heres the thing... camo, what happened to you is a freak occourence... something was already toasted on your truck if the t-case blew up...

when you run in 2wd with the hubs locked its the same as running a vehicle with the ADD hub plates bolted on... yes, the front axleshafts spin, and yes the dif spins, but its no different than vehicles that came equipped from the factory... any speed is safe...

and the gas mileage claim is almost nonexistent... i swapped FROM ADD hubs to manual hubs and didnt gain any mileage, so running in 2wd locked wont use more gas...

the main thing is the stress and the wear on the parts... the front CVs WILL wear faster and with the IFS already being what it is, why test it... ya know? i mean, thats the main reason that us ADD guys put manual hubs on their trucks in the first place... to save on the wear and tear...

hm...something else must have been wrong. I keep my hubs locked from when it snows (usually october) until the roads are dry (usually late april, early may) NEver had a problem at highway speeds. I usually drove 65-80 (yes over the speed limit and way too fast for the conditions) in 4wd going to school. I was a teenager mind you, but still. Never had a problem. Never had to replace any CVs either.
The little "4wd operation" card in the visor says you can put it in 4H (when the hubs are locked) under 55mph.

During the winter time my hubs are always locked just in case i need to put it into 4h. I haven't ever had any problems with this but i do see why it would be extra un neccessary wear and tear on the front cv's.

I've shifted into 4hi at above 50mph and nothing blew up. With my ADD hubs I have driven at least 80mph with no problems. I don't see anything blowing up by driving with the hubs locked. A bit more wear and tear and *maybe* a slight loss in mpg, but even that won't be noticeable.

I lock the hubs for a few miles every couple of weeks if I haven't gotten off road on my Pickup because it will lubricate all the components and keep things from rusting. I just lock them on a run to the store and unlock them when I get home.

Toyota recommends driving at least 16 miles every month with the hubs locked to keep everything properly lubricated.
