finally passed smog...but got problems

so today my 86 truck passed smog but they had to retard the hell out of the distributor to do it, after they did this I had absolutely no power. I will obviously change it back to what i had it before but im curious if this is usual for the older generations or maybe its a sign of something. I just changed oil, plugs, and even cleaned most of the throttle body. I am just a little confused on this
oh by the way its a 22re with about 200,000 miles on it.
Thanks

Retarding the timing will usually lower NOx emissions. Given the mileage on the engine it's possible you have some pretty heavy carbon build-up in the chambers.
Can you post all of the test results? That might make it easier to figure out what's up.

I tested again today and passed with awesome numbers, But I did have my mixture knob at -15 and was reading AFR's at 15-17:1! But hey I'm ENVIROMENTALLY FRIENDLY!
Look at these numbers!
