I was told I should get rid or the torsion Bar On my 85 pick up 4x4 , for better handling . Have any of you done this . Prose cones. thanks Aj

 

No torsion bar on 85's. Do you mean sway bar? sway bar removed and it will be sloppy on the road and higher speed dirt, but on the rocks its will be a little better.

Its all good, no worrys. Where you are at, lot of freeway driving i imagine. Propably would just leave them connected.

 

The truck will be used for camping and if all works out , some nice 4 wheeling.

i have ifs and the truck is fine around turns and stuff with no sway bar. i take turns fast as i would with a car.

 

Then again, you are right... for the truck. My runner has no sway bars, and holy crap!!! feels like a 68 lincoln mark 3 around the turns. it just depends on the vehicle and the condition of the suspension components.

 

I took the sway bar off my 86 (actually done it on 2 86's one with 35's) Its a little harder to handle but I still drive it on the freeway at 70 with no problems. Its more a matter of driver comfort and if you are comfortable with it or not. I am fine but I can imagine with the body roll some people wouldn't like it.

 

I wouldn't recommend disconnecting the sway-bar or torque rod on the truck if it's used primarily on paved roads.
As other's have pointed out, the sway-bar keeps the body from leaning during cornering which helps keep suspension geometry from changing and maintains a good tire/road contact patch. If you're going off road then quick-disconnects are a worthy invesment since that will let the wheels move farther without upsetting the chassis and helps keep the tires in contact with the ground.
The torque rod is there primarily to keep the axle from winding up when you apply the brakes. Without it, braking will cause the axle to twist and can affect steering geometry in a not so good way, possibly changing steering direction (pulling to one side) or altering camber and toe which will affect handling under hard braking situations.

 

If you're just using it for dirt roads and camping with mild wheeling, then I wouldn't even bother removing the sway bar. Or you can always just remove it and see how it rides. They're not hard to remove and reinstall.

For what it's worth, I removed mine off my 86. With 31" tires, I honestly could not feel any difference. But with 33s, I do notice more body roll. It doesn't feel spooky, but it is noticeable.

 

Thanks everyone , For the advice . I did take them off , just to see if I could feel the difference , or liked it any better . Then I felt a clink or bump When I would turn the wheel . I need to sand and clean them anyway . it's all rusty under there .
