Aluminum lug nuts?

Hi,
I just picked up some SR5 aluminum rims from the wrecker and threw some tires on them.
My truck had steelies. Another toyota guy at my work told me that I need special lug nuts for the aluminum rims.
Something to do with the taper in the nut.
Can someone confirm this for me?
Or can I get by without throwing down more money at the stealership for toyota lug nuts?

Thanks,

Stuwy

It depends on which year and model you are talking about, but you will likely need the lug nuts that are shaft style with washers. You can get them from your dealer, or parts store. Good luck.

I'd see if you can get a gasket for between the rim and the hub too, that's a pain in the arse when they stick as well.

I would never put anything between the mating surfaces on the wheel hubs. If you put a gasket in there you would risk and un-even seating on the hub. That could result in a wheel working it's way loose. Or at best a vibration on the free way. Its best just to clean the hubs up with a wire brush and shoot them with some penetrating oil. They dont stick when they are clean. It is corrosion build up over time that seizes them on there. And that can simply be remedied with a swift mule-kick to the sidewall of the tire with loose lug nuts. Make sure you have a sturdy jack for that one. I worked with wheels and tires for a few years and from my experience Toyotas are notorious for loosing wheels. I wouldn't mess with the set up at all.

To answer your question, yes, Toyota aluminium wheels require a special "shank" or "mag" style lug nut. The "acorn" style lugs you have on there now with the steelies will not work safley.

The lug on the left is a Toyota lug nut used for the aluminum wheels (The older design is smaller and black). The lug on the right is just a generic "acorn" style lug nut. Yours may not look like that but the seat of the lug nut shares the same shape.

You can buy the Toyota style lug nuts at just about any parts store...but be prepared for the price of about $3 each or more.

Thanks everyone for their quick and helpful replys.

I figured it wouldn't be safe. Oh well.
With my powers of deduction and keen observation, I figured out which ones I needed.

I made a quick trip to Crappy Tire (it's a canadian thing) and like everything else at that store, they didn't have enough stock. Great.
I bought what I could (2 boxes of four for 8 bucks). Now I just need four more boxes, my mission for my lunch break.
I wanna get these tires on before I go camping this weekend. WOOHOO!!!

My new tires are getting more miles in the back of my truck than on the trail.

Haha I think that works because of the taper on the tip. They probably look really goofy.
