I'm replacing the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and drive belts on a '97 3.4L Tacoma. The old water pump was bolted directly to the block and sealed with FIPG black gasket sealant. The new pump (part# 16100-69398-83) comes with a metal and rubber gasket. It's metal with a rubber lip surrounding the inner edge where I would normally put sealant. The factory service manual makes no mention of a gasket or depicts it in any diagram. The gasket looks like it would easily do the job of the sealant and I don't want to compromise the seal.

Should I use gasket sealant with the rubber gasket and if so how much (normal 2-3mm bead) on both sides?

Any other tips you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Yea, you're suppose to use just the metal gasket, no FIPG crap.

 

Perfect example how sweet it is to search before servicing major parts.

Although the new seal is designed to do the job with no added FIPG, as long as you didn't use too much FIPG, and it doesn't leak when you start it up, you're fine.
