How Much Lift Before Steering Mods Required?

I have an 85 truck. The springs are crap now and its time to upgrade, might as well lift it right!?! Question is, How much lift can i get under it with minimal/no steering work. I don't mind upgrading the steering, so, maybe if its some easy stuff that is the difference between a 3" or 5", ill go 5 inch.

Also, Instead of blocks, Id rather use springs to lift the rear. Suggestions for what do to with the rear springs? (Tips/Hints)Ideas?

Im not muddin if I can avoid it, just wheelin and crawlin an occasional rock if it makes itself available

It depends on the lift...you can still use stock steering but with lift you add bigger tires and stock steering is junk for bigger than stock tires and will break quickly.

For high cross over steering you need 3" of lift.

At around 3", you'll likely need to add a dropped draglink and torque rod:

Above 4", crossover steering is the best option:

Crossover steering is such a vast improvement over the stock push-pull setup it is well worth it.

Lots of rear spring options out there, do a search here.

Im thinkin 4 inches might be just about right. Whats your opinion about hysteer? Ill upgrade steering for sure, Just want to wait for a few weeks to get some more $$. Can I get 4 inches of lift under that truck with 33X12.50s, and be drivable without steering mods?

Thumbs up

3 inches max with out drop drag link. My opinion if you want to go 33inch on tires go front and rear with a downey offroad lift. the 3inch lifts from the rockcrawler places. like marlin, allpro, trail-gear are usually only for buggies. they save the 4inch or higher for the full body rigs. You open up a whole can of worms and pocket book if you go hi-steer and proper lift... but yes like everyone says well worth it! biggest reason is no breakage and no bump steer.
